    Hi folks

Quick question. Gotten enquiries about an ad I have. Is it normal for people to look for a picture of the log book?

    Thanks

    Gar

Never heard of that before! There's nothing they need from it.
The reg will get them all they need, could this be a car cloning thing?
Maybe someone else has heard of this and can shed more light :)

Well it can prove you're the owner and a private seller not a dealer also you can't lie about the number of owners, so quiet a clever thing to ask for , no real down side s for you if it's not a too high res photo

Tell them they can have a look at it when they come view the car.

No that's not really a normal request. Is it just one person looking for this pic or a few?

How can it prove your the owner though? The seller could still be a dealer and put the registered owners name down on the ad.

The only way to know if the owner is a private seller and the real owner of the car is upon inspection of the car when their id can be cross checked with the details on the log book.

Op don't give a pic of the log book is my advice.

Not usually normal for a Buyer to look for a photo. however he/she may have concerns that the seller is a 'private' dealer.
Maybe somebody advised them to check the cert to see if it matches the seller's name and address
If they are miles away from you and it's insisted on then I would at least block out the Chassis No.

How is that possible when the buyer has no access to some form of identification from the seller.

I did say that 'maybe someone advised them'....
...and the buyer can always ask to view the car at the seller's home address, just to help confirm they are the same person that's marked on the VLC.

Personally, I wouldn't bother. If the seller has a VLC and is willing to show some bit of ID (Driving Licence for example) then I'm usually happy enough as long as the car is OK.

When ringing someone about a used car, I usually say "I'm ringing about "THE" car". If they say "Which car..?" chances are they are a dealer..!
Googling their mobile, often produces results as well.

I do not think that there is anything wrong with the request. Snuff out part of the chassis number.
As regards "you can see the log book when you get here" I would not like to travel 300km to find out that the log book has irregularities or is not in the possession of the seller when I get there.
Perhaps the buyer is doing a cartell or other check on the car
We have to be careful when selling and buying not paranoid.

You won't know either of those things until you view the car and talk to the seller.

looking at a pic of the logbook isn't of much use you won't be able to compare the details on it with those on the car or with the sellers id until you go and view it.

All that is required for a cartell report is a reg number.

Would be great if everything was that simple.
In fact having a picture of the log book will tell you a lot as you can cross reference the details that come from the vehicle check with the log book and at least you then know that the chances are good that it is a genuine sale.
I have travelled to the UK and further on several occasions to buy vehicles and I have always asked for sight of the V5 log book and the cert number and MOT cert number in advance.
I am then able to go onto the gov.co.uk site and get a lot of information.

A reg number means very little to a buyer but is a good scam tool for a scammer as of course a cartell check will give you details pertaining to the registered car but you need to cross reference it with the log book to make sure it all adds up
Many advertisers now blot out part of the reg number so that the scammer cannot use the number for an online scam.
Again you need to be careful not paranoid
