    Hi all,

I got a W8 laptop. But it asked me to sign in with an email and windows account, now whenever I log onto my desktop it always says that it's logging on as my email address.

Is it actually my email or what's going on here?

eg. it comes up as the normal start up screen then it says: ****@gmail.com, why isn't it asking me to sign in with the normal name I gave at the start like usual. I don't want my email always to be used for it.

It isn't logging into your email.

When I originally set up my windows account, it used my name@gmail.com as the username and a password for the Windows Account. Just like how iTunes might use your email address as your login ID. Or any number of online services. For instance if you have an iPhone and you go to download an app you may notice that it asks for the password to your iTunes account, and my account name for itunes so happens to be name@gmail.com, even though the password is completely foreign.

So while it says "****@gmail.com", thats just your live-account username. It is not a direct affiliation into your gmail account.

A quick way to confirm this for yourself is to not use your gmail/etc password as your windows login password. for that matter, never ever duplicate your email password for use with any other services. That includes your banks, health insurance, car insurance, boards.ie, etc. etc. - because as important as all those other services are, it is your email address those services use during a password recovery, and therefore you should take extra steps to make sure your security for your email is especially secure and unique.

Anyway, I later decided to create a myname@hotmail.com account and windows live let me port my user settings over to it. This does let windows tap into my hotmail account for the mail app quite naturally, but I tell it to do so. For my gmail, gmail requires 2-step verification. So for mail apps such as those on android/ios/windows 8, it requires you to log into your security panel on gmail.com and assign each of those services a unique passkey, "application-specific passwords" and you can revoke these at any time:

Without a Live account on your Windows 8 device you will not have access to update/install Apps, have native-support for SkyDrive, or have your bookmarks, preferences, settings, etc sync across windows 8+ devices.
