I was trying to find a right forum to ask the question hope this one is.
So I have a TV. My landlord said there was a communal satellite dish for the building so I can get all the free channels, all I need is to connect TV to the antenna socket. So went to shop, got the cable and ... nothing. What am I doing wrong?
TV is Saorview approved etc. so that's not an issue.

Your TV needs to have a freesat tuner :)

If it doesnt then get a freesat box instead

You will need a freesat box or a second hand Sky box to receive signals from a satellite dish.

    Saorview works from an aerial

Edit; beaten to the draw by wiz569 :)

Does the socket you connected to have more than 1 type of connection? Saorview isn't a satellite service.

Your tv would need to have a satellite tuner to get the UK channels. Some do: what's the make & model?

I think it does have it, it's this model Toshiba 40D1333B.

It doesn't have a satellite tuner. If you want Saorview, you will need to be able to receive the signal from terrestrial transmitters, from a connection to a suitable aerial. Really should be included in all communal systems but (very) often isn't.

So... I guess I have to ring Sky sooner or later. I think there's only a dish here. However the antenna socket has two round thingys, not sure what for. Tried both of them but nothing happened.

It would more than likely be a trivial matter for the landlord to get a terrestrial aerial installed & feed the signal into the distribution system (assuming it hasn't been done already).

What have you done re. trying to tune the tv?

Also, you don't need Sky to provide satellite tv: Freesat has already been mentioned here. No Irish channels on Freesat though.

If you only want channels available free why don't you get a free to air or freesat box like the ones sold on these sites http://www.tvtrade.ie , http://freesat.ie

There are few options: to tune via digital or analogue or satellite or aerial or both or all of them. Tried all options, scanning digital and the other one, in Hz. I was going to get Sky anyway, but only unpacked the TV and was hoping for some tv over the weekend.
    Thanks for the help.

Is satellite a valid option in the menu? Are you sure you have the model no. right? Your tv has a built-in DVD player?

Yes, my TV has a built in DVD, got the model directly from the box that is right next to me:)
Ok, the menu on the screen in front of me (auto channel scan):
    - digital aerial
    - digital cable
    - analogue
    - digital aerial & analogue
    - digital cable & analogue

    There's no satellite option, sorry.

Have you tested both wall points for a signal?

Hmmm... given my level of knowledge in the matter, should I stick a finger in it? :)

have you tested each wall point by connecting it to the TV aerial in and doing a scan?

As already stated you will need a satellite receiver to pick up the signal fromt he dish, you wont have rte however if its only satellite signals provided to the appartment.

The reason I asked him to check both connections was because he posted that he thought there was only a dish there, worth checking just in case there is an aerial there also.
