    Hi, guys.

For personal reasons, my OH has decided that he wants to take my name when we get married. Which is fine by me but I'm worried that it won't be as straight forward as it would be if it was the other way around.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Changing your name in Ireland is done by common usage. I see no reason why a guy would run into any other issues than a woman.
If he wants to take your name then he needs to only start calling himself Mr whatever. Bring his marriage cert to places that want proof.

I think that's great. It's always pushed onto women, so if a guy volunteers to take your name, it's a nice change. I'd be chuffed...

I cannot see how anyone could object. People may find it odd, but if he brings his marriage cert wherever he changes his name, e.g. Bank, Work, etc.. They can't really deny him that as it would be discrimination, I'm sure..

Though there was an article recently about guy getting sued because they thought he was trying to commit fraud by changing his name. It was in the US or Aus I think and maybe it was just one of those stupid tabloid scaremongering things..

AFAIK, if your hubby's taking your name, then he'd have to do it by deed poll (passports, driving licences; etc). I'd check though.

Yup, has to be done by deed poll if it's the man doing the changing.

Stupid situation, but dem's de breaks.

Not true. As said above, there's no rule about deed poll name changes in Ireland. You simply start using the new name and common usage makes it your name. Plenty of men use a different first name, eg Ben instead of John Benjamin, and common usage would apply for passports etc.

Deed poll can be used but its not legally necessary. Information on this is on citizens advice website.
