Hopefully they'll announce its availability at an event in the next few weeks along with new iPads...

When Mavericks is released is there any advantage to doing a fresh install of the OS? Or is it best to do a simple update?

Not really. I've been upgrading my install from Snow Leopard through to Mountain Lion and my machine is still in tip top condition.

There's not much point doing a clean install unless you are going to leave it clean. Wiping your drive and re-installing OS X only to then migrate your old apps and user account over from a TM backup, as most people do, is not a clean install. It's closer to the old "archive and install" option, except you've just gone around the world to do it. A regular upgrade already does basically the same thing and if there were any issues with your old user account you've probably just migrated them over.

So as a rule, I don't do a clean install unless I have to.

I am still running Lion (10.7) on my Mac, anyone know if I will be able to upgrade directly to Mavericks (10.9) or will I have to buy Mountain Lion (10.8) first?

I think I remember seeing that you will probably be able to, but you'll have to wait until launch to know. Most likely I think, as it's all app store based.

All you need is 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).

Looks like a few new bits coming soon - http://9to5mac.com/2013/10/15/apple-announces-october-22nd-ipad-event/

I'm curious to see what the new Mac Pro will be like and how much it will cost.

But, the new OS will be interesting too.

Looking forward to getting this, skipped Mountain Lion so I'll go from Lion to Mavericks (wierd name).

Also enjoy John Siracusa's epic OSX reviews, so looking forward to that as well...

Been running the GM now for over a week. It is very much a step up from Mountain Lion. I tried Lion and Mountain Lion on my 2009 Macbook and they both failed to impress with performance so I went back to Snow Leopard until now. Went from 10.6 to 10.9 in a one hour upgrade. Mavericks is finally the real successor to Snow Leopard. Still has the iOS features from ML but it really feels like it was made for the power user!

Scrolling in Safari is screwed up up but otherwise no major issues. Some of the under-the-hood improvements are great but the UI is mess. We’re back to the all-over-the-shop UI. It wouldn’t be so bad if Apple continued to remove skeumorphisms from apps in point releases but we know they won’t.

What are you running it on? No scrolling issues here on my 2008 MBP running Mavericks. FWIW I set it up as a fresh install.

Mid-2011 MBA. When scrolling down with the trackpad the page will occasionally jump back in the opposite direction. Small but annoying bug. May affect all apps but I’ve only noticed it in Safari. The DPs were plagued with scrolling issues, so I guess Apple still has some work to do.

Perhaps this weekend's GM mark II will address the bugs...

"This weekend, Apple seems to have updated the OS X Mavericks Golden Master (GM) version to a new build. The new build is 13A603 while the original GM seed was 13A598. It’s not common for Apple to change the GM build for a Mac OS, but it is not without precedent. Apple has altered GM iOS seeds before they shipped to customers on a few occasions in the past. Users of the new build have not reported any noticeable user-facing alterations…" - 9to5mac

Yes that's how it was with me last week 3 days after it was announced via the app store. Thought I'd let the rush die down but didn't seem to make any difference. Got it via other sources in the end that cannot be discussed here  (even tho it's free...) in about 8 minutes!
