Mileage allowance claim

    Hi All

I am confused about what mileage I can claim in my job.

    I have a private car.

Lets say I live in Swords and my normal workplace is in Drogheda

On a given day I have a work appointment in Finglas first thing. I know I can claim from my house to Finglas.

My appointment is finished and then I go to to the office in Drogheda.

What mileage can I claim for the journey back to Drogheda

    Thank you for any advice
    Paddyo

It depends on your companies mileage policy to be honest.

Any additional mileage on top of your normal daily commute would usually be what companies allow you to claim, though I've worked in places where they exclude mileage in a certain area.

Check the policy in your work

yeah, as Stheno says it depends on the policy in place in your workplace.

Where I work, the situation you outline would work like this - the normal commute would first be checked (usually on google maps or similar). Then this mileage would be deducted from the total mileage done. In effect this would mean that the Swords - Finglas - Swords leg of the journey would be paid out, but once you hit Swords on your return to Drogheda that would not be counted as you would have had to make that journey anyway.

+1 to tatli_lokma, where I work your normal commute is never billable as you would be doing that anyway to get to work. So in your scenario the commute would be deducted from total mileage and then whatever is over that is billable miles, plus parking etc. We use the AA online routeplanner to calculate.

Weird, our staff handbook says all mileage is billable from the office. More often than not that works in the employees' favour

That could be out of date. Revenue made a change recently whereby mileage is only tax free if it's the shortest of either the route from office or route from home.
