    Hi,

I am trying to calculate my rent supplement.
I am receiving €188 on disability allowance. My partner is on the back to education allowance receiving €160.
Our rent happens to be the max limit for a couple of €425 for our county.

Can someone please help me calculate how much we will have to pay weekly towards the rent?

    Thank you.

So you will get €425 a month RA?? If the rent was €600 a month you would have to pay €175 but because your rent is only €425, you pay nothing because you get RA. I think I could be picking this up completely wrong though!

Once the amount of Rent Supplement you qualify for has been worked out, it will be reduced by a minimum of €30. This is because you must pay at least €30 a week towards your rent. You may pay more than €30 because you are also required to contribute any additional assessable means that you have above the appropriate basic Supplementary Welfare Allowance rate towards your rent. If you are one of a couple and are claiming Rent Supplement you must pay at least €35 a week towards your rent.
Any non-dependent household members who are solely dependent on a personal social welfare payment must also contribute €30. However, if benefit and privilege has been assessed against your social welfare payment you do not have to contribute €30. If the non-dependent household members are a couple their contribution is €35.
A couple over 65 with an income equal to or less than the State Pension (Contributory) for their situation will contribute €35 a week towards their rent. A couple who both have State Pensions (Contributory) and no other income will also contribute €35 towards their weekly rent.
    Calculating Rent Supplement

Calculating your Rent Supplement can be difficult. The Department of Social Protection's representative (formerly known as the Community Welfare Officer) will decide if you are eligible for Rent Supplement and calculate the amount you will get. More information is available on how to calculate Rent Supplement.

Usually if your only income is from the social you will only pay the minimum per week ie €35

Here's how to calculate your Rent Supplement and your contribution.

    1. Get the appropriate SWA rate for a couple (€186 + €124.10) = €310.10.

    2. Get the total of your combined SW payments (€188 + €160) = €348.

    3. The difference = €37.90

    4. You have to contribute €35pw (as a couple) plus €37.90pw (the difference between the SWA rate and what you actually receive. Your weekly contribution should be €72.90.

    5. Your monthly rent is €425 (or €102 weekly). As you have to contribute €72.90, you should receive a weekly Rent Supplement of €29.10 (or €126.10 if paid the supplement monthly).

    6. If you qualify for Fuel Allowance, this is not taken into account for Rent Supplement.

    Hope this helps.
