Why did RTE axe the very trendy hip 11pm News 2 on RTE two and replace it with a regular rte news bulletin? News 2 was so hip, the newsreaders would wear jeans and a shirt instead of suits

Its gone a long time now, September 2003! The reason really was that it was beginning of the end of the "hip and trendy" N2 era (remember that), the N2 name would last another twelve months or so but all the programming innovations associated with that era (which was probably the most innovative of the 34 years it has been on air) had all gone at that stage.

Another reason was that RTÉ had decided that in the digital era, this idea of treating N2 and 2FM as if they had nothing to do with RTÉ couldn't really wash. Hence the introduction of DOGs that same month, with the RTÉ logo integrated - it would not be long before the second channels on TV and radio would officially become RTÉ Two and RTÉ 2FM. And why News 2 would become RTÉ News on Two, which lasted in that format another ten years but since January sadly lives on only in name as an extended summary. Maybe they decided they couldn't compete against Vincent Browne.

The casual look was carried over to RTÉ News on Two for a time if I remember correctly. I was kind of glad to see the back of the poor looking green screen background and use of the proper full RTÉ News studio.

    This too shall pass.

I remember Anthony Murnane saying at the end of the final News 2, "Time to say goodbye to these desks after six years."

Also, during the bulletin's final months, Sharon Ní Bheoláin became pregnant, and she wasn't ashamed to show her bump while announcing the latest events in Iraq. :D

The casual look did indeed carry over to the News on Two for a year or so, although all this really meant was Anthony and the other male presenters wearing suits without ties.
