Any truth in the rumour about DSD purchasing a property with 15 acres of land near St Columbas College

Lindie Naughton put something about it up on facebook the other day, she is usually on the ball.

Entirely possible. At 31 August , their filed financial statements showed that they had a bank balance of €2,203,594. In addition, the filed financial statements of The Women's Mini-Marathon Limited (which the club owns) showed that it had a bank balance of €638,229 on 31 August 2012. A combined total of €2.84 million. Yes, really.

Isn't it high time for them to be doing something worthwhile with their money.

It will probably require a lot of flattening out - although maybe they are buying a hill-running track!

I wouldn't be surprised if it was membership by invitation only from now on!

    :eek::eek::eek:

That makes them about 2.839 million richer than my local running club.
Mind, we pass almost all our race profits on to charity.

afaik they've been trying to spend this money for years, but haven't been able to get the right piece of land. At the moment their training is spread out over 5/6 locations, maybe more

Is it true that Bros Pearse held the pub quiz to fund the purchase of a lawnmower ;)

Sadly lack of organisational skills means that they are still without a lawnmower :P

Hopefully they will get it before the end of the year.
Would make the kids Christmas to have the grass on their track cut.

For a small donation to our lawn mower fund, I should be able to slip you a few answers at the quiz , so as ye don't come last.

I think DLR have some involvement also. Fantastic to hear, another track in the southside is a good thing definitely. It spells an end to any sort of involvement with UCD, I'd be very surprised to see a track again in UCD, not for the next 10/20years anyways.

If UCD doesn't get a track in the next few years, it will never happen, as there just isn't the space for one on a new site and you can be sure they won't leave the current site empty long term.

DLR has plans to build a track at Marlay.

Just use the BMX track, doubles as cross country training :)

Why would DSD buy land and build a track [etc] at St Columbas, and council also build a track less than a KM away at Marley, that makes zero sense? Some kind of public/private partnership is really standing out here, where both of them work together to get one good facility sorted...

Unless DSD dont play well with other kids, and wont share :)

The bmx track is long gone! The original plans for MARLAY included a track but I am pretty certain it was only a sprint track.

Yesterdays sindo had an article on this. According to it the council have plans to build a track in Marley that DSD will use. There are no plans to build a track on the new land. Now, that was in the sindo so maybe take it with a grain of salt.

    that article
Dundrum South Dublin Athletic Club has ended their 15-year search for a new home with the purchase last week of 'St Thomas', a listed Georgian residence set on 15 acres in Whitechurch, Dublin 16.

The property cost €1.25m – a price scarcely credible in south Dublin only five years ago – but thanks to a combination of fundraising and money raised through one of the its marquee events, the Dublin Mini Marathon, the club had plenty of savings to fund their venture.

For the last number of years they've had a technical working group scouting potential locations.

Safety came first; they wanted a clubhouse with land where their young athletes could train in a secure environment. They now have 15 acres and within that is a six-acre field ideal for their needs, and a trail around the perimeter of the grounds.

Location was next on the list; being in close proximity to Marley Park was vital as many of the club's athletes train there. And there are also plans to build a track in the Park which the club could have access to. Conveniently, St Thomas is only 400 metres from the back gate of Marley Park. Having the Dublin Mountains behind their new home is an added bonus as the hills will facilitate those who want to go for longer runs.
