Im trying to wire lights on a porter trailer into the plug. Im wondering about which colour wire goes where? How are you meant to know?

I always find them diagrams confusing... as it depends what direction you are looking from if you get me... are you looking at the pens straight on or have you the plug /socket open and looking from the back where wires are connected!!!

If you look closely they are usually numbered as per diagram above.
