Best time to sell cow and calf

    Hi
    I have a angus x Charolais cross heifer calving in 4 weeks time to RHF from Dovea what time would be they best time to sell her after she calves?? Because I didn't make silage and have 7 incalf cows and 4 weanlings to feed I know not a lot but how many bales would I need for them, I won't be putting then in til the weather gets bad thanks

    Id sell now , same money and none of the hassle...if her time up n 4 weeks she mightn't calf for another 2 week's and another 4 week's before calf strong enough....that Christmas week!!!

    You would of course!! I think you'd want the calf at least 3-4 weeks old before selling on. You should do alright with them too esp at this time of the year

    Thanks for reply, just about the feeding situation how many bales would I need??

    Using the formula Teagasc gave out you would need about 84 bales if the winter was to last 6 months! Less if we had a reasonable winter. I use the same formula and it is fairly accurate.

    Multiply number of cows by 1.4, multiply that by number of months you expect to have to feed, ie 6
    Multiply number of calves by 0.7, multiply that by number of months to feed.
    Add these two answers. This gives the answer in tonnes and to turn that into bales multiply by 1.1 .

    So you have 7 cows X 1.4 = 59
    4 calves X 0.7 = 17
    Totalling 76 tonnes. Multiply by 1.1 so your total is 83.6 bales
