Few more rats a mink later then bring her on a dig let her watch and travel when clear then drop her at the end of a dig she should get it by then mind her after that for bushing get her out after rabbits with the springers

I'd say get her out bushing as much as possible, get her well socialised, used to other dogs/hounds and livestock and get her used to travelling in the car/van/trailer.

If you can get her hunting and using her nose you have some chance, and then hope for the best.

5 months is still young, even for rats, although you would be very happy with the way she reacted. I wouldn't be in any rush to be digging with her, but no harm in bringing her along to a few digs when she is a bit older and let her see what its all about.

What breed of terrier is she and how is she bred?

Best of luck with her, a good one is hard to come by,

Don't introduce her to anything else till she's over 12 months old! If she gets soured she'll be good for nothing!

Id try her on a couple a rats and mink next year and spend this year getting her used to other dogs and a little obedience training! You really need to be patient, even though she's showing good signs, she's still only a pup! By the way, gameness comes natural to terriers, no training required!

Do you know any lads who do serious rat control? Like council type of control on farmyards and landfills?
Be a great place to bring her.

If you do hunt rabbits with and you plan on digging with her dont be put out if you think shes marking a fox and you dig down only to find a rabbit or more likely a narrow tunnel although I had a fell bitch that would flush pheasants and was rock steady to dig to never shot anything for her though

i was going to say the same thing if your your going digging her i wouldent be giving her rabbits id wait a while give her a shake when the other dogs are on and give her pocket when she is ready for it

I and many of the lads I know bring on young terriers open hunting. I've yet to dig to one of my terriers on a rabbit.
I wouldn't encourage them if they're marking a rabbit burrow though obviously - but a bit of bushing isn't going to do any harm.

As for rats in a cage? It proves nothing and couldn't be further removed from what a terrier is expected to do when they begin their digging career. The anti's love to bandy around the word baiting for terrier work - which is incorrect - but letting a terrier go on a caged animal or giving one a bit of 'pocket' for that matter isn't a subject that should be discussed on an open forum.

Thing is Charlie that it's either in them or it's not - you can't make a terrier work. You can however screw things up when the time comes to enter it.
Give it plenty of time and follow Cork Rebel's advice that he gave you above.
If you're from Cork as your sig says then I guarantee there's someone into terriers not too far from you. Something like 80 packs (of all kinds) hunting in that county alone? Try and get out with one of them if you can. You'll learn more in a few days foxhunting than by reading all the forums on the internet.

Nothing wrong with giving your dogs a rew rats in the right manner of course ,,, and I have dug to find a rabbit twice ,,, maybe you hunt with packs and the hounds are putting the foxes to ground but not all terrier work is done in open hunting I do agree that dropping dogs in a pocket should not be discussed on an open forum ,,,,,,my hand is up ...

I've dug to another persons dog on a rabbit - not my own though.
The fella that owned that dog would let them root at a rabbit burrow, stickpile or whatever - I let mine hunt them in the cover etc but once they put one in or cold mark I call them off straight away if I think it's a rabbit.
They'll come away no bother - if they don't you know there's something else at home.
I always run them with the B&F collars on just in case.
