You only need the special student travelcard for within Dublin http://www.studenttravelcard.ie/index.aspx (DublinBus, Luas, and I'm not sure about DART)

For Bus Eireann and Irish Rail all you need is a valid student identity card.

Not sure about Bus Eireann, but for Irish Rail, that's only a special. Granted, it's one they have extended quite a lot since implementing it, but it's still listed as a special. The standard travelcard could become a requirement for them again soon.

I suspect not - student numbers on Intercity trains have jumped up apparently since they abandoned it so it wouldn't make a lot of sense to bite the hand that feeds you!!!

Irish Rail were in UCD during orientation week handing out flyers and telling people that you didn't need it anymore!

The only time you need the Student Travel Card on Irish Rail now is for the Student Weekly/Monthly commuter tickets. They don't accept your ordinary student ID card if you are travelling on one of those tickets, you need to have the travel card.

Surprised nobody check their website to confirm, though I wonder if the "short hope zone" is a reference to the likelihood of the train actually turning up? :D
Weekly or Monthly tickets are perfect for students travelling to and from college everyday. These tickets offer great savings and convenience.

For travel within the Short Hop Zone (SHZ) a valid Leap Student Travelcard or Student Travelcard are the only ID's accepted.
For travel outside Short Hope Zone a valid Leap Student Travelcard, or a college ID from one of the colleges below are the only ID's accepted
