In the market for a new mac. Was looking at the 27" iMac (currently have a 24") & then was thinking maybe a mac mini & 27" display would be a better option.

    Anyone any thoughts ?

I think the latter is a better option myself, but then it depends on stylistic and design considerations too. The iMac is undeniably more beautiful in it's minimalism, but if it's placed in a drab location then what's the point?

You should ask a mod to move it here: Mac Forum.

I just got the new mac mini and a pair of AOC displays. Mush prefer it over the iMac set up. I've seen them use with large HDMI TV's and still come in under the price of the larger iMac's. Depends on what your using it for.

I think a Mac Mini and another display makes more sense than an iMac but I would not buy a Mac Mini RIGHT NOW because they're due an upgrade.

iMacs don't make any sense to me. Limited screen adjustment options and so what if they're getting thinner and thinner? It makes sense for laptops but for an all in one? I dunno... If you're getting a 27" all in one, desk space saving could not be on your mind.

iMac is a beautiful piece of kit, but Mini and separate monitor are the way I've been going for years.

If I were going that route I'd like the modularity and separation of computer and monitor but to get the mini's specs up to iMacs level you have to spend quite a bit more, no? I'm not entirely versed on them though, but thats what it looked like to me a couple of months ago. I also wouldnt buy a TD or an ACD until an update comes out. Not expecting retina, but hopefully HDMI in.

TBH at the moment I'd get a 27" WQHD monitor thats not Apple made due to that flexibilty. I have the Asus PB278Q right now attached to my MBP and while not as nice as the Thunderbolt Display that I had before, it means that I dont need an extra monitor to attach other devices to the display

Ended up getting a cracking deal in the refurb shop. The only downfall is 8gb ram but I'll upgrade that myself. i7 processor, TB hard drive & 27" screen.

Just got an email to say it was dispatched. Now to sell the old one.

If you're going the new mac mini route, I'd get one with the Fusion Drive and the minimum possible RAM. Upgrade the RAM yourself later and you'll save a fortune.
