Chimney Draught Problems

I've just moved into a dormer bungalow and the draught on the chimney is very poor (smokey room when i light the fire). The chimney itself is lower than the peak of the roof so i presume this isn't helping things. There is a spinner on the chimney already but it's not doing the job (especially on a calm day).

Someone recommended an O-H Cowl - any idea if this would do the job for me? Or any other alternatives?

    Thanks

    Hi Rooster
The chimney height needs to be 600mm above the ridge to obtain a proper dreught on chimney see attached sketch. You are wasting your time trying any cowls. no height = no proper draught

Most people move over to having a stove which will dramatically reduce drafts
