When you say the laptop won't recognise the phone, does this happen for all devices? Have you installed the Nokia Suite software on your laptop?

One of the easiest ways to transfer data between the phone and the laptop without the USB cable is to take out the microSD card from the phone and use an adapter to plug it into the laptop. This works well for copying over and back photos and music.

For contacts, if you have bluetooth on your laptop you can connect to the phone via the Nokia Suite and sync your contacts that way.

You can also back up your contacts to your Microsoft Outlook.com account online and your content (photos) to Microsoft Skydrive online and access them via your laptop to download them to your laptop.
