The pilot. Up there as one of the best series' openers ever imo.

Every episode except the one with the fly!

I loved "Fly" actually. My favourite though, is "One Minute". The most sweat-inducing couple of minutes I have ever sat through.

I think the fly episode was my favourite, excellent acting from Cranston throughout the series but IMO that episode was his finest performance.

You must have been riveted watching The Garage in that case.

Are people really genuine when they say the like Fly? I get the sense people only say they like it but don't really mean it. The RV cook in the desert was a much better 'bottle' episode imo (and should be on this list imo, but I can't remember the episode's name).

Was Dead Freight up until Ozmandias. Amazed that my 2 favourites were in Season 5 given that a lot of my favourite characters had been killed off by then, credit to the show that it kept improving right through....

The pilot or the second episode or the train heist

I voted ozymandias but theres just too many full measure is excellent, fly is up there with the best the tension in it is great, same with box cutter loved that episode too.

All brilliant episodes, very hard to pick. Gonna go for edge-of-seat criteria on this, and while Hank's attack in One Minute is great, the utter desperation and doom surrounding the last act of Crawl Space, nailed home by Gus at his most threatening, Walt at his most scared and Skyler's wham line "I gave the money to Ted" just tip it over the edge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,400 ✭✭✭✭Turtyturd

Really don't get the hate for Fly....the tension throughout the episode of will Walt let it slip about Jane or not is great.

Can't remember the name of the episode but the one with Walt and Jesse trapped in the RV with Hank outside is great as well.

But half measures probably gets my vote because it includes my favourite moment of the entire show......'Run'.

Dead Freight. Favorite episode of any TV series I've ever seen.

    My 2nd favorite episode!

I get the feeling that 'The Fly' will be a common topic of discussion throughout this thread so I thought I'd throw in this piece of trivia :)

According to creator Vince Gilligan, this was a "bottle episode." Because the season was already "hopelessly over budget," it became necessary to create an episode with minimal production costs. By filming in one location and using the fewest number of actors in the series to date, "Fly" cost substantially less than the average episode.

    http://breakingbad.wikia.com/wiki/Fly

I remember watching the episode and feeling Walts frustration. We all know that feeling when we are trying to watch tv and a fly is on and off the screen or even buzzing around while we try to sleep. At the time I thought it was more of a symbolic episode portraying Walts mental state at the time, a self-contained character study in psychology. Or perhaps the fly symbolised the elephant in the room which was telling Jesse the truth about Jane's death. I'll stop there because I feel like I'm writing an answer to a LC poetry question.

At the time, I thought the episode would never end but looking bad on it I actually appreciate it for what it was. Great work by Gilligan imo.

It's so hard to choose from any of those, but I do have a special affection for Peek-a-boo.

I loved Jesse's interaction with the little boy throughout that episode. When he's sitting outside with him after rescuing him from his awful life with those awful parents, he gets up to leave and simply says "Have a good life, kid." and it made me cry.

In hindsight, he should have taken his own advice :(

Matt Zoller Seitz, a very good writer on cinema and television, picked his 11 favourite episodes (or the 11 episodes "he can't shake"). "Fly" came out on top. Worth seeking out that online article.

My Favourite is probably "Say My Name"

From that list though I'm going to go with "Crawl Space". The final image of that episode was one of the highlights of the whole show for me.

Foreshadowed the final image of the entire show as well, Crawl Space was the first thing I thought of as the shot panned back from Walt's dead or dying body while Baby Blue played.

I picked 'Full Measure' because the ending of that one genuinely took me by surprise. Walt shouting 'they've got me at the laundry, and they're going to kill me' to Jesse on the phone followed by his utter calm when he recited Gale's address to Mike was fantastic - it was one of the few times in the early days when his Heisenberg persona took over and you realised just how dangerous he could be.

Did a rewatch leading up to 5B and posted this on Facebook on 23rd July:
Just coming to the end of my Breaking Bad rewatch... and just finished "Dead Freight" (the train heist episode in the latest season). Definitely a top 5 episode IMO. That final scene with Todd still packs a punch. Just noticed it's got an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing... well deserved!

    It's SUCH an episode!

The last 90 seconds of that episode could be one of my favourite scenes in the whole series... Aaron Paul's facial expression is heartbreaking!

The pilot should be on that list. Failing that, Ozymandias. It was the only episode in the last season where there wasn't some niggling fault that bothered me. I've turned into such a comic book guy:(

    No.. think it's "Sunset".

"One Minute" is the episode that famously ends with the
shootout between Hank and the two cousins in the parking lot

Thats the saddest moment in the whole of BB for me. Was truely gutted for Jesse.

It was between that episode and face-off for me. I just love the whole build up of Gus walking to his death, the "I Won" and the Lily of the Valley reveal.

the final arc of season 4, from crawlspace on, is the finest run of episodes of any show ever. Whatever about the series as a whole, those episodes were a different level of tension and what a release.

    Crawlspace for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

Crawl Space for me too. Though I don't think it's the best episode, it's certainly the one I enjoyed the most, and the one episode of anything ever where I absolutely had to learn what happened next!

    The train heist.
    Granite State.

It's an episode that seems strangely unpopular but I think Cancer Man is probably one of the best eps in the series. I guess it's because more actioney eps like half-measure and dead-freight are the ones that remain in people's minds but Cancer-man was the point where it really became clear that Hal from Malcolm could really act. The talking pillow scene is always ridiculed for some reason but it's really moving stuff imo especially the bit where Betsy Brandt is moved to genuine tears by Walt's decision to not get chemo.

I also LOVED the last 20 minutes of the FLY.

Entertainment Weekly did an article where they ranked all 62 episodes:

    http://www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20302134_20737170_30022851,00.html

You probably won't agree with their ranking but they offer a brief review of each episode, which is interesting.

Favourites of mine are One Minute,Dead Freight and Ozymandias.

Though my favourite ending to an episode has to be Crawl Space.

Walt cracking into laughter as it echoes through the hall to a terrified Skyler was chilling.

    Crawlspace for me.

These few episodes are my favourites also. The first time I saw Crawlspace I couldn't breathe with the tension. Surprised to see Salut isn't there, it's probably my second favourite episode.

While Season 5 was brilliant, I still feel like the end of S4 was the pinnacle of Walt's 'winning' - everything got so tragic after that.

I wouldn't be mad keen on 'Fly', as I'm in general not a fan of bottle episodes. I find them gimmicky. (I don't hate it though, and would never advise someone to skip over it like I've heard some people advise!) And this little tidbit kinda cements my indifference to the episode. It felt incongruous, and now I know why.

Well, TBH, 'Malcolm in the Middle' proved to me he could act, he was the stand-out in that show.

Wait, was that actually Betsy Brandt crying, not her making the character cry?

Entertainment Weekly ranks all 62 episodes. Some surprises in there, but the fact the the lowest tier on the list still outranks most television out there today is indicative of how brilliant the show is

I like Full Measure because Walt actually comes across as the most badass and you realise he has it in him to compete with all these bad guys. People like the last few of season 4 but I thought it wasn't that well thought out, I saw a lot of it coming before it happened and a lot of the sense of jeopardy seemed false. I mean, it was pretty clear he had a little while to get everything together for his family, him and his family were in danger for ages before anyway. He's taken to the desert, threatened, but it's clear he has at least a few days if he behaves. But he goes mad and sh**s himself instantly? ok Then.
