    Hi Guys,

The camera of my dreams (D800e with a few lenses) is available for considerably less money on simplyelectronics.net.

I've heard mixed things about them being very slow to deliver in other threads etc..

What I was not sure of however is whether or not I would be due for tax / import duties as I am not sure where the hell they ship from exactly.

They have an address in UK and an Irish phone number, but read in another thread that they ship from Hong Kong.

Has anybody had anything shipped to them via UPS/FedEx etc... and been stung for taxes / charges. I kinda want to know up front what this thing is going to cost / not cost me.

    Thanks,

    Tom.

    NOW ILL EXPLAIN WHY

so i was looking for an astro A50 headset and simply electronics kept popping up in advertising irish company etc...

headset was 40 cheaper than buying directly from astro but was still 300 euro. i paid in full and was told it will ship between blah blah blah etc...

so 3 weeks pass and no headset so i ring the helpline and it takes an hour waiting on hold and nobody picks phone up so i then choose talk to sales and immediately phone is answered, so the sales lines are answered immediately and the line for help etc never answered. eventually got talking to a very rude guy saying sir understand your headset isnt in stock it will be coming in in the next few days - weeks i was going crazy and accepted that a week or two my headset would arrive. so no headset a few weeks later and i ring again cant get through to helpline but sales immediately answer and i demand a refund and sales staff basically told me they would not deal with me and i would have to que to speak to accounts.. another hour later i get talking to them but to be told a refund will take 21 days minimum...........

5 weeks later i get my money back.....

DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY LOOK AT THE REVIEWS ONLINE AND MY STORY WILL STAND UP.... pay the extra few quid and have peace of mind

On the other hand, I know a guy who ordered one 50mm 1.4 from them and received two.

So they're not devious. Just incompetent.

On the tax question, my understanding from reading about them before is that they're exploiting some loophole that allows them to get around the VAT. Don't recall the specifics.

There are also plenty of people who have had no problems whatsoever with them.

They're just a crappy grey-market Chinese company exploiting a tax loophole. Screw-ups and bad service are to be expected. You're not dealing with Amazon here.

TBH I was most interested in the VAT/duty thing.

There would be nothing worse ordering 4k worth of equipment only to be stung with a further 1k by DHL on delivery :O

Are you guys absolutely positively sure that they are using a tax loop hole?

Same as Dark Knight - a couple of years ago I ordered a lens from Simply Electronics, it was at a great price and 'in stock' according to their site. It wasn't. Six weeks of ringing and emailing customer service yielded nothing. In desperation I searched consumer forums on the web and found a direct email address for someone in their customer service department - I can't remember her name - emailed her, got a response, got an apology and luckily, got a refund. Never again.

Anyone that would advise to use this company could find themselves in the mental health hospital in Dublin some time soon ;)

If you are in absolutely no hurry whatsoever, and you can save a lot of money, go for it. But just expect that its going to take forever. Plus if you have to send anything back you're in trouble. I ordered my camera body and got it in under 2 weeks. All fine. I know another mate who orders all his stuff there, thousands worth. You need to call them and see if they have it in stock. However I have two friends who had a total nightmare. I'm told they wait for a certain amount of orders for each product before shipping over.

I've bought from them twice now. I was a bit wary at first reading reviews but my first purchase was fine, the only negative was that it took 2 weeks to arrive. The second time I bought a Tamron 90mm macro lens, and it arrived 2 weeks later. Two months later though it broke, the focus ring got stuck between manual and automatic. I rang up the help line, they told me to send it back, and a month later I received a new copy of the lens. This ones been working for the last 2 years but honestly I don't think I'd shop there again.

This was my worst on-line shopping experience EVER! This is a SCAM company from Hong Kong - STAY AWAY FROM THEM!

I recently purchased a HTC One Mini smartphone on Simple Electronics website. It looked like an Irish/UK website (I later found out they are based in Hong Kong, China). The estimated product delivery provided on the website was 2-5 working days. After that time I tried to contact their customer service, as I did not get the phone. They replied that the product will be dispatched immediately. I was not happy, as the product supposed to be delivered within 5 working days, not PACKED and DISPATCHED after 5 working days. They ignored my comment and did not contact me any more. So I did a quick research on the Internet and found out I'm not the only one tricked by Simple Electronics. To make the long story short. I immediately got in touch with VISA customer service, they promised to dispute the transaction for me but I need to wait another 5 days before they can do that. I kept e-mailing Simple Electronics and was constantly given different information regarding the status of the order. I requested the order to be cancelled on several occasions and they kept repeating 'please confirm you want to cancel the order', which I did SEVERAL TIMES. Today I got an email stating the product was dispatched to me today. I am NOT going to sign the delivery sheet, so the product will return to Hong Kong, and I will then have to wait for the refund. I reported Simple Electronics to Action Fraud, as they should be closed down for their actions.

    They're not a scam, they're just crap.

Scammers don't deliver, Simply Electronics do. They just take 10 times longer than they say they will. :pac:

Not sure about it... I read lots of reviews on the Internet and many people complained they did not receive the item at all, or received faulty/broken items etc. At the moment I don't have money, did not get the ordered product so I'm not sure what to think about it...getting lots of bu***t emails from their customer service reps, contradicting each other...I spoke to VISA customer service and they said if the date of delivery is not known after 15 days I can dispute the transaction and try to get my money back in this case...hopefully :(
