    Hey guys,
I have found myself with a week off work coming up and unfortunately nobody I know can take time off at the same time. I have never travelled alone but I am considering it.
I am torn beween going to a sun destination or a city? Can anyone recommend? I want somewhere quite safe for a female travelling alone.
    Thanks!

You'd be as safe as a house in Germany, Austria, Holland, Belgium, Scandanavia etc.
to be honest, where actually isnt safe in Europe anyhow?
even crime hotspots like Barcelona, Prague, Rome have more thieving than crazy gang rapes or that.

What are you looking for in your week off? Do you want to explore, visit museums etc. or relax on the balcony with a good book, glass of wine and hopefully some sun?

TBH I think a mostly relaxing holiday is really what I need right now. I do love exploring cities though, doing walking tours, visiting churches and museums etc. A bit of both might be perfect!

Wroclaw in Poland is very cheap, has lots of lovely buildings to see but may not be very sunny this time of year.

Berlin is great with lots to do, go on one of the fat tyre bike tours, you'll get chatting to others. There's also a few pub crawls (not my cup of beer) that looked popular.

I thought Berlin was very safe, we were out until all hours and never had a problem.

Well for relaxing would suggest Lanzarote and the Eldorado apartments in Puerto del Carmen. Very easy if you are travelling alone. Quick taxi ride from airport and apartments are in good location near the old port (across from the biosphere if you know PDC) lots of restaurants close by. No hassle there at all if you are on your own in my experience. It might not have the culture you would like as well but if you want to chill out, feel safe and hopefully get a tan, would recommend it.

Enjoy your break whatever you decide to do.

Im just back (yesterday) from 6 days in prague, 23 yr old female and stayed in a hostel. it was great, only time i felt a bit unsafe was walking back a bit late at night but sure you'll have that anywhere! Even here! Only downside to travelling alone for that long is getting sick of your own company unless you luck out and meet some nice people! Prague is a lovely city to explore and really cheap id.suggest you go there and maybe another city..a week in one can be quite long but thats just what i found, you could be different! Wasnt too warm at night but lovely during the day

Why not fly into Eindhoven and fly back from Munich or something.

Leave it totally flexible and stay in some cities on the way with the Train, e.g.

Aachen, Cologne, Worms, Freiburg and Munich.

As your not in any rush just get the Intercity trains and stop off wherever.

I travel alone a lot and personally I'd recommend a city rather than a sun holiday as I find sun holidays quite boring when you're on your own, prefer to have someone to chat to and have a glass or 2 of vino together when lounging around. But you aren't going for too long, so maybe it's just what you need.
At least with a city break you can be off out doing things and no one will pay you any attention. I know when I first started doing it I was worried that it would be awkward and people would be looking at me, but then I realised they weren't, and that I do loads of things at home on my own such as going to work, shopping and when you think of it most people travel on work trips on their own so it is quite normal to see people out eating and travelling on their own :D I even went to LA on my own twice!

Oh and if you're interested in doing a bit of both, Barcelona has beach and museums, buildings and churches!

Few things I find work for me when travelling alone is have nice meal out at lunchtime, that way you feel less out of place as 'table for one' than in a busy restaurant in the evening and plan as much as you can beforehand. I like to book a few things in advance also as I find it can be the easier option to just stay around the hotel, but if you've booked a ticket for something, you'll be more likely to get out and about!

Anyway, enjoy, whatever you decide to do.
