Just looking at the specs on these 4 crew cab vehicles. They all have 2.5l engines.
Toyota Hi Lux, around €31,500. 144 hp, 2,500kg towing. 7.3l/100km.
    Isuzu D Max, around €33,000. 163hp, 3,000kg towing. 7.4l/100km.
    Nissan Navara, around €31,000. 190hp, 3,000kg towing. 8.4l/100km.
    Mitsubishi L200, around €32,500. 178hp, 2,700kg towing. 7.7l/100km.

Which would you go for. The Hi Lux would be my preference but its underpowered compared to the others.

Hi Lux would be my choice. 144hp is a bit on the low side. All the hilux 3.0 D4D's I've driven here in Australia have been 170hp-ish. I work on mining sites/driving off road/bush driving every day in a dual cab hilux. It's a company/rental so it sees all the abuse you can give it.
Other guys have the Mitsubishi Triton/L200's and they just aren't on par with the hilux. There are some that are 2-3 years old with 100,000 km on then and they feel exhausted.

Navara's have had good variations and bad so do your research on them before you go near them.

As for fuel consumption don't expect the figures you've quoted at all. I do wel over 1000km's a week and get about 11.5L/100km in the 3.0 D4D AUTO hilux I've got. It's pretty consistent with any of the manuals I've driven too, regardless if its been straight highway 80-110kmh runs. At the minute I'm probably getting about 12-12.5L/100km with about 80km a day highway and the rest in 4WD off road and the car left running all day. I think the best I've gotten is about 10.5L/100km.

Have you thought about the Mazda BT-50 (same vehicle as Ford Ranger). Not sure if they are available in Ireland but they are performing really well over here. The VW Amarok could also be worth considering.

Thanks Pete. I was thinking of a 2.5L vehicle rather than a 3L one because of fuel consumption.
I see the Ford Ranger is either a 2.2L or a 3.2L and both are heavier on fuel than the others. The Mazda version of that doesn't seem to be here.
The Amorak is expensive and even though has high hp is only a 2L engine. I can't seem to find info on it's towing capacity.

2800kg is the Amorak's towing capacity for the 160bhp model, the info is there if you google around a bit for it.

I don't think there will be all that much difference in fuel consumption between a 2.5 and a 3L. I've got a 1994 75 series Landcruiser with an old 4.2L 1HZ non turbo engine in that pushed out 129hp. Around the city I'll get about 13.5-15L/100km and on the open road between 80kmh-110kmh I'll get anywhere from 10.5-11.5L/100km depending on the terrain. It's doggedly slow to accelerate and to climb hills. I'd hate to tow with it but just goes forever.

Yeah, the Ford Ranger is pretty damn big. Even the bonnet height is noticeably taller than other 4X4's. It definitely looks more American. They do have a 6 speed gearbox which is meant to be really good though.

The Amarok is expensive but it gets really good reviews for its abilities and is probably a bit more capable than the Hilux. That being said it is a smaller capacity engine pushing out a lot of power so it hasn't been proved in the long term.

I've had work colleagues say they had D Max's out in Western Aus for work and after a few months they had rattled themselves apart. It's just hearsay though.

I've had older (2003) 3.0L hilux dual cab pick ups before and while they had to be worked to get them going I was still getting 10.5-11.5L/100km out of it. That was on fat tyres too.
