Fun competition for mixed ability golfers

    Looking for suggestions here.
Going on a weekend golf with 6 of us in total with mixed ability. 3 are 12 - 15 H/C's 1 is 18 and the remaining 2 have no handicap. They can hit the ball but like Forrest Gumps box of chocolates you never know what you'll get. They could go 6 holes in 4 over or they could pick up on ever hole. Chances are they haven't played since last year.

The idea is to have something that lends to competitive(ish) game. The tricky thing is how to handicap the 2 duffers and come up with a format that keeps them involved.

The best suggestion I have received so far is for team competition is a combination of Stapleford, Better Ball Drive & Waltz (ie 1 to score @1st, 2 @2nd, 3 @ 3rd, 1@ 4th etc)

    Any suggestions?

A scramble is always great for lads who dont play much, but not much use if you want to keep track of your own score, play your own ball?

In similar events I have played :
    - everyone keeps their singles stableford score
    - 2 scores to count on every hole and everyone on the last hole.

Its hard to even it out so that everyone has something to play for, but this seemed to work well enough.

+1 on the scramble idea, would work pretty well if you divide the golfers & hackers up evenly as possible

The only issue is that we are playing a couple of courses that I really want to play and see how well I do, so as Greebo says, its hard do to on a scramble. Maybe on one of the days

yeah then Id go with the old 2 step, not sure I would have everyone counting on more than the last though, might not be too far on the beginners?

You could always go as 2 teams of 3 or 3 teams of 2 but the teams are not revealed until the end (random card picks).
So that way every hole counts as you dont know if its needed or not.
The only caveat would be to keep the hackers on seperate teams

Or what about a skins game?

    I'd go teams of 3

    1 score at 1st, 2 scores at 2nd

Then follow the pattern- 1 score at 3rd, 2 scores at 4th

That way you have no hole where each player has to score , which could put the high/non handicap players under pressure. Also each player is playing their own ball so can get an idea of personal score if required

    Another idea:

    Teams of 3

1 score to count on par 4's

2 scores to count on par 3's and par 5's

Think it's called a Champagne scramble.

Everyone drives, take best drive and everyone finishes out from their. Best 2 to count on each hole. Use everyone's drive 3/4 times. Par 3's played as normal.

Big issue for Non players is getting in play off tee.

Another good game that might suit and really get everyone involved is the following : stay in the club house and order load of crisps and beer, the three 12-15 handicappers suggest that the players with no handicaps should not be given more than 18 shots. Hours and hours of fun follow. (Note that there is a risk that the barman (or 'Mod' as they are also known) will step in, close the bar, and send you all home - but its worth the risk).

    Appreciate all the suggestions...

Pbobably go with a skins one day and some version of the Champagne Scramble.

Almaviva, we'll be playing the beer and handicap game the night before we play....
