is there anything in the way of a break for a first time mortgage , it seems that the striped away any benefit ie first time buyer and mortgage tax relief etc

Im afraid, government improved mortgage interest relief for certain taxpayers a few years ago. Reality is the government hands are tied and not in a position to include many 'relieving' measures right now.
