Not a German, but he's in Wexford, close to Ferns or Enniscorthy.

there's a Scottish chap out the road from Wellington Bridge who's into restorations, I was down at his place during the summer and I was impressed by the quality of his work. He showed me a nice Land Rover he'd just finished. Very tidy work. I can't remember his name but I could give you directions to his place if you wished to talk to him. PM me if you like :)

This guys work is top class but trying to get him to quote for work is like trying to get blood out of a stone!

I think its because he's found that trying to get paid for some of the work he's quoted for is also like getting blood from a stone.

If he can't get paid for work he quoted for, then what chance has he of being paid when the finished price comes as a shock to the customer?
An experienced restorer should be able to quote you based on past experiences, including an added 20% or so for eventualities.

I've had work done by Alex and he can be somewhat elusive about price but only because you never know what you will find behind the paint when you strip it down and I suppose likewise he wouldn't want to frighten off a customer who had a pretty straightforward paint job, he gave me a " elastic " quote as he called it and only went over it because of extra work I had him do and although not cheap I'm very satisfied with his work.

I never said that he did not get paid. What I meant was that people in general have unrealistic expectations of how much a 'restoration' should cost.
They usually have a figure in their head, and Alex (who has been restoring cars for the best part of 30 years) usually knows give or take what is involved.
In theory to restore a car that was bought for 100 Euro, and has a market value (concours) of 5000 Euro could cost 10000 Euro to restore.
Try explaining that to someone, with little knowledge of what is involved, and you will see what I mean.
I had a car done by him close on 10 years ago at this stage, and its still perfect, and it is used quite a lot, in all weathers.
I don't care if anyone uses him or not, but in response to the OP's question, he is in Wexford.

Alex Hynes is in Boolavogue ,his work is outstanding ,he doesn't cut corners,he does it to original spec, but at a cost.
I have seen him in action and the man is gifted,if i could get any of my projects half as good as his,i'd be in my element.
