My hairdresser drew my attention to a patch of alopecia I have on the left side of my scalp.
I am so upset and worried that it is going to spread.
Does anyone have any experience? Over the weekend I noticed one of my toe nails is ridged also and I know they are connected. Don't know what to do, everything I have read today has said there is no treatment for this.

Hi, 4 years ago when i was 19 i was diagnosed with alopecia areta, i had six circular patches on my head so i know how upsetting it can be. I did the same as you and Google'd it and i honestly thought i was going to loose all my hair. I tried steroid creams, herbal doctors, and a tricologist(he was the worst,he showed me different wigs so i really thought i was going to go bald). At the time i was studying as a hairdresser but i gave it up as i found it hard to do other peoples hair when i was loosing mine. I stopped taking my birth control pill as i read online that sometimes hormones trigger hair loss, my hair started growing back a few weeks later. A few weeks after that i started seeing someone so i convinced myself it was all in my head and that the hormones had nothing to do with my alopecia. I had the bar put in my arm, literally within a week my hair was falling out again. I had the bar removed and my hair has been fine since. Im 23 now and i definantly think the hormone caused mine. I have said it to doctors and they have said that it is a coincidence and it was probably down to stress. I don't think they want to look more into this as allot of people dont have these reactions to hormones. I have another auto immuine condition called necrobiosis lipodica, someone told me its common to have a few auto immune conditions, like its all linked or something.. i really hope ur ok and i hope this helps, i found a great support site called alopeciaworld, theres very nice people on it if you need to talk to someone xx

Thanks for taking the time to reply KittyKat7, your experience and relaxed me a little. I have the Mirena for about 4 years now so I don't know if hormones are affecting me. I know stress is a trigger and a couple of months ago I had quiet a stressful few weeks.
I am going to go to the gp to see if there is anything underlying causing this, maybe she can do a blood test for thyroid or iron levels.
Thankfully your hair had started to grow back again, hopefully it will be the same for me.
