Hi all, i am working as a contractor which is up on the 18th of October. To avail of job seekers benefit while i look for another job can i start the application process now or do i have to wait till the 18th? I've never done this before so am not sure if this is possible as i heard it can take a good while to be processed.

    Thanks.

You can apply the day you finsh. A p45 will make it quicker. Youre not self employed?

Thanks for the reply no i am not self employed. Does it take long before you can start getting payments or is there a wait? Worried about my rent if i don't find something soon.

In the information booklet "Guide to Social Welfare Services" (I have the 2006 edition but it probably is the same still) it says you should go to your local SW Office "on the first day of your unemployment".

If you are a contractor I take it you are self-employed. If so you will not qualify for Jobseekers Benefit (based on your Social Insurance record) but rather Jobseekers Allowance (based on your weekly means). This is means- tested and your own and spouse's income - if you are married - will be taken into account in assessing your means and calculating what amount, if any, you will receive.

Just saw other reply after compiling my own. It will be "Benefit" so that will speed up process.
