Losing power in the rain

Lad just wondering why a car would loose power in the rain, check engin light comes on, feels like the engine is misfiring. Car is 00 1L Polo, anytime we have torrential rain it happens.

Just to note the engine is starting to show it's age, spitting oil up into one of the spark plugs, only way to fix is a rebuild and I'm not doing that, has been going great for a good while now, not a peep out of it but knew this morning when I looked out it would happen again and it did.

Sounds like one or more of the coils are breaking down in the damp.

Is this hapening before or after you drive through puddles?

Wait for a dry day, then start car with bonnet open and spray water (use a clean spray bottle with only water) around the coils, one at the time. If you see sparks or hear idle change you know which one it is.
This method can also be used for vacuum leaks in hoses.

I wouldn't use water spray to check intake leaks. A shot of WD-40 is just the ticket - it'll burn that, and increase idle slightly.
