I've passed this a number of times over the years and I've always meant to ask about it.
    Is it in operation?
Anyone on here ever been stung by it?
Are there any more in the country?

The static speed Camera just after the Dunleer on ramp?

It works when the motors in. I've seen it flash in the past.

That's the one. When the motor's in? Do they remove it or something?

I passed it weekly for 2 years and never saw it flash for people passing me out past it. 120 kph glued to cruise control for me.

Yeah, me too. Drove past it on Sunday night at approximately 19:00. I was the only one even close to the speed limit. For that stretch anyway. :pac:

I don't think it's operational. I've driven past it at 130km/h and more on several occasions and never paid the price.

If your on your high horse then don't talk to me. Raise the issue with the relevant (Meath or Louth) local authority.

Same here, I've never gotten any fines for speeding on the M1 and I use it regularly enough

There are no fixed speeding cams in Ireland currently.

They got burned down too often.

Hence they've been replaced with mobile Garda vans and the scameravans.

    There's
    - the empty shell on the M1
    - the sign from the one on the N4, that used to sit on the N4 near Lucan before it got redone (camera gone, sign still there)
    - and then there's the 2 sections on the M50, where there's stripes on the road and a bridge over the road, but the cams (when they were installed) have never worked.

If you want to ensure, that they don't start using it again, you'll know what to do. But chances of them sticking a camera in that again are low to non existant, since other solutions are in place. And even they get burned down.

    /M

I don't think Frankie Dettori on Shergar himself could catch you.

they should paint those stipes on the road for cams all over the place. Even if there is no camera the make drivers slow down not wanting to take the chance....

I doubt 90% of motorists know what those lines mean. And anyone who is clued in, will notice they are non-operational before or at the very most after their initial pass.

The Gatsos cost an absolute fortune to maintain, around 20k/year / camera.

You still see a few people braking before them on the M50 especially the Northbound one before the airport exit.

Aye. But that junction is a complete mess anyhow. No harm in slowing traffic down a little.

Kinda agree, but seen several near misses due to muppets slamming on the brakes without any need.

That can only happen if the person behind isn't keeping their distance and/or sleeping. Hence fault of the person behind. Not the person slamming.

When the fixed cameras were in use I believe that, because of the cost of them, the Gardai only had a very small number of working cameras (maybe 4?) and used to rotate these around all the camera sites periodically, so most of the time each camera site was just an empty box beside the road.

I can certainly remember the M1 one being operational - one night a few years ago I was driving south with an SUV tailgating me as I overtook a line of slower moving cars. I overtook the last one and moved back into the left hand lane at just the right moment for the SUV driver to floor it, accelerating straight passed the camera - flash, flash...sweet!

Yes, as you know the M50 etc is full of truly vigilant and perfect drivers, it's the exception I worry about lol. Fault is one thing, stupidity is another, I'd struggle to have any sympathy for someone jamming on on the motorway for no good reason.
