Do people have any thoughts or experience of this job good or bad??? Considering applying tho not sure if i'm ready for it yet experience wise although job satisfaction is fast decreasing with our deteriorating conditions of work. I love teaching but no time for extra curricular activities this year - becoming bogged down in admin. Maybe hscl will provide more job satisfaction - appears to be more hands on and I can work more independantly....any thoughts?????

    Thanks:)

If youre trying to get away from admin youre heading the wrong direction. If you think for one minute that you won't need to record every visit, every call, every referral.... Youre wrong.

I haven't done the job but work very closely with our own HSCL. It is varied and interesting but there are some very difficult situations you will come across which can be hard in you emotionally.

I did it for 5 years and enjoyed it. I don't think I could have done it for much longer though. Your head can get pretty melted with some of the stuff going on in peoples' lives.

There's a lot of paperwork but it's a job that allows a lot of flexibility. That doesn't suit some people. You need to be a good organiser and obviously people skills are vital. A huge amount of cop on is necessary for dealing with parents and staff.

You need to be a very good listener. If you take your work home with you (as in worry about other peoples' problems) forget about it. You'll hear things that make our issues as teachers pale to insignificance.

Thank you for getting back to me with the excellent advice. I didn't get the interview this time - but hopefully next time if the post doesn't get cut. :)
