Changing the tax class of a crew cab jeep. HELP!!

We bought a Nissan Navarra Crew Cab in 2008 from England. Before we bought it we went to Waterford RO and asked specifically if it would be classed as a commercial, even showing them pictures of it. They said yes, but when we went there with the documents after buying and returning with the vehicle they wanted €2000 for VRT and said it had to be classed as a Private vehicle because we were not registering it in the name of a compnay or running a business to which it could be attached. We now want to sell it and the Dept at Shannon, who were the only ones so far that I can get an answer on a phone from, said that the classification can be changed once it's in the new owners name, but we're still trying to verify that with ANY Revenue Office that will answer the phone. Any ideas??

That is to be expected as your seeking to import and register it as commercial but want to use it privately just like a car that is liable for VRT and private tax.

As a privately reg 4x4 its not a very attractive proposal.

Why not start up your own business as a sole trader.

Hubby is a plumber so wanted the use of it for work but it had the room to take the family and all the junk when heading to the beach or bringing home the entire contents of the local garden centre! He didn't have his own business and isn't plumbing now because of health issues, (the spirit is willing but the body is weak! lol) so we can't justify the running cost now. If they'd have told us that we needed to link it to a business to bring it in as a commercial he may have looked for something different or at least we would have made the decision to bring it in the knowledge that we would be paying that much. It just seems that you never get the full story when you're looking for information!

A Crewcab vehicle is looked at as a special category. It will only be taxed commercially if you can show you need to carry a crew in it, (ie more than 2/3 persons) for work purposes. a self employed plumber is going to struggle to meet that requirement.

Thanks Corktina. Haven't heard that one before. Today I rang the Revenue office in Wexford and the phone was answered within three rings. (Impressive!) They gave me the number for the Central Vehicle Office in Rosslare who, once again, answered very swiftly and informed me that I need to deal with the local motor tax office with regard to classification. Sadly, the staff at Kilkenny Motor Tax Office must have their phone in a locked suitcase inside a locked cupboard as it just rings and rings and rings.............. We have other business in Waterford tomorrow so we're going to visit the Motor tax office there and sit and wait and ask questions until we have an answer. On my knees praying for good luck!!

Do they do that for vehicles that need the category changed only? Or for all new owners subsequently?

Ie does each new owner of a 5 seat convertible need to prove their reasons for ownership?

We have the answer from a fabulous lady in Dungarvan, Co Waterford Motor tax office. The Navarra Crew Cab is always classed as a private vehicle to close the loophole of getting cheap tax on a vehicle that can be used for social, domestic and pleasure uses, BUT if you want to TAX it as a commercial you have to fill in a declaration form, which is signed by the Garda, on which you are declaring that the vehicle will be used for work purposes only and will NEVER be used for Social, Domestic or Pleasure use.
We were happy to pay the tax while we could justify the need for the old girl but not any more. Will miss her in the bad weather!!

Private tax just isnt justified on large 4x4
I love driving my jeep but I thinking of selling it as 1809 motor tax a year isn't substantial.

Without trying to be a smart arse, why would you think it could be treated as a commercial vehicle if you weren't going to use it as a commercial vehicle?

Well, Marcusm, it was to be used as his commercial work vehicle. We had a family saloon and the old toyota saloon he did have for work was at the end of its tether! He was driving to Sallins from just outside Waterford every day with another worker and sometimes they picked up another guy. It carried all their tools and sometimes they had plant or materials to pick up during the day for the job they were working on rather than waiting for a delivery, which was something he couldn't do with the old jalopy. It was just a bonus that it could take three of us to town if we were all going that way to save on using both cars or a bus fare and was handy if you had a heavy load that was a bit too much for the family car. Mind you, it was no good for a Christmas tree. A Toyota Carina is still a better bet for carrying a 7 ft Tree thatn a van!

it's that bonus that isn't allowed (although I and most people always used my van however I wanted.) Not got it any more
