unpaid maternity leave

    Hi all,

I'm looking into the extra 16 weeks unpaid leave that you can take at the end of your maternity leave. I'll be getting one parent family payment and was just wondering does anyone know if I'd still be entitled if I took this unpaid leave? Going to ring social welfare tomorrow but just thought I'd ask!

    Thanks!

Yes you should do as you will have no income but double check.

Best place for this is State Benefits. Moving and leaving a redirect in Parenting.

Was this query answered at all? Let's say a woman is in employment and gets her 6 months maternity leave on full pay, then she wishes to take another three months unpaid maternity, well in this instance does she receive any kind of benefit as technically she would be without any form of income for 3 months?

    Here's how this works
If you are getting maternity Benefit and you are parenting alone you apply for OPFP as soon as your baby is born and if you are awarded it then you will have it in full plus maternity benefit at half rate.
If you decide to take unpaid leave after the maternity benefit ends then you will continue to get OPFP at whatever rate it was awarded until you return to employment when the means test will kick in
Women in codependent relationships who take unpaid leave on the cessation of maternity benefit are not entitled to any Jobseekers payments as they are neither looking for nor available for full time work
If the other parent is working and earning below the income level then he or she may apply for FIS
