Change Tractor?

    Advice appreciated please.

I have a Massey 168, good nick and going well. However it doesnt have a front loader and I could do with one.

Trying to decide whether to go to the expense of getting a front loader and brackets fitted to the 168 or consider upgrading to a newer tractor with front loader? My budget if i was changing would be €10,000.

What models would you recommend if i was to change in teh above budget?

    Thanks

You seem to be a MF man so probably a MF290 4wd would be a good bet.

We have a DB996 with loader which would be similar enough.
None of these 2wd tractors are suitable to be brought out on soft ground with the loader on.
The front wheels are too smal and narrow, and it lifts weight of the rear too.

However with a decent stand it's not too much bother dropping off the loader.

I'd upgrade to a Case 885 4x4 with loader already fitted.
Newer Massey's are way over priced

stick with the massey and get a good one and it will last you another 40 years like the 168. a nice 398 or 390t or 290 or something like that.

I be slow about buying a 290 most will have a lot of work done and very old. 390 might be an option but may be a bit over your budget for your money also you will only get a floor shift for a bit with that money. If it s tractor with a loader you will need a 4WD unless it will always be on concrete for the winter and you gave no soft ground.

A Ford 5610 or 6610 will be an option but hard to come across a clean one. A case 4230 but you will need a good mechanic with you buying one however you will get one with a loader handy enough. A zetor 7540 if you can come across one. An older case would also be in the frame. However when buy a tractor in that price range you need a fella you can trust that knows that type of gear. You also need a fella that is familiar with a few different types of tractors and is not fixitated with one or two brands.

for €10k you could pick up a Deutz or maybe a 2850 JD or Same 100.4 all with loaders and a proper cab and have a bit of pulling power with you also so you can look at buying other machinery in time.

or other option is put a back end loader on the 168 :D. I know a dairy lad beside my parents who had one on a 135 for 20 years. Only changed to a front loader in the last 2 years . Back end loader would be €600 - €1000 with a grab on it

Don't get me wrong, Massey is a great tractor but paying 15k for a 20 year old tractor is obscene.
I was looking at something similar last year and ended up buying a manitou loader for 7,500 and a ford tractor for 6,000.

Massey Prices do seem to be a bit obscene. I used to work for an agri contractor and had a 390. Lovely little tractor and plenty solid for a loader. Farmers love this tractor, some days you'd drive onto a farm and farmers would just stay and chat about the tractor, which never happened with the big fancy models.

I think there is a Landini that is pretty much the same tractor built from the same parts. Would be cheaper than the equivalent 390 massey. Can't think of the model

Landini 8880 is a grand solid one. One at work since new and nota bother on her. Used for all the heavy work... Ploughing, rotavating, power harrowing for the last fifteen years and she's still motoring on.

An 8880 will match any 390 anyday :D:cool:

Nice and simple bus and a heck of a nicer cab than a MF 300 series IMV.

have a 9880 here and its only fit for scrap. Its a brilliant tractor to pull but the quality aint in it. 4WD is gone. Bearings on steering gone. And elctric lifts have broken twice this year. Im lucky i have dry land

we never have time to mind em ha. We had a blizzard before her and she was a right little goer. Cab was very tight though

What is up with the 4wd? It is a simple system.

Electric lift is very very rare on 80 series.

she has rung off on the crown and pinion and all the bearings on the steering are gone. Gonna cost big bucks to fix. Ye she was destined for france or somewhere like that but it was sold to an irish farmer thats why it has the electric lifts. It has an area meter aswell but it never worked since we got it
