What to expect when going to see an accountant?

    Hi everyone,

I'm starting out as an associate with a company but I'm going to be basically self employed in this role. I know I need to make an appointment with an accountant, but I've never been with an accountant before so I'm just wondering if someone can advise me of what to expect.

I'm assuming I need an appointment soon to talk through the plan, but then will I just see them next year some time to go through my actual taxes etc. or should I expect to have to see my accountant on a regular basis? I won't be employing anyone so it will just be my taxes that I owe based on the receipts of money I receive from the company I'm working with and then also claiming back tax on travel expenses etc.

Also wondering if someone can advise me on an approximate amount to expect to pay for my appointments... Just so I know so I can make sure I have out aside enough money to cover that! Also should I expect to pay for my first appointment or are they likely to start an account and bill me at the end?

    Many thanks.

Normally your first appointment would not incur a charge, it would be rolled into the annual accounts fee.
