    Hi everyone

I am pregnant with 2nd child and am due late January 2014. I am thinking of starting my maternity benefit on the 30th December 2013. Can any tell me what year will be the year of assesment when calculating my entitlement to maternity benefit.

    Thanks all.

2011 id imagine. It works off two years previous

Maternity Benefit is a payment made to women who are on maternity leave from work and covered by social insurance (PRSI). You should apply for the payment 6 weeks before you intend to go on maternity leave (12 weeks if you are self-employed). The amount of money paid to you each week depends on your earnings in the relevant tax year (2 years before your Maternity Benefit claim).

Can I just jump on this thread instead of starting a new one?

Myself and my husband are considering having another child, which would mean that if we were lucky enough to be able to have another one, I would be claiming Maternity Benefit in 2014. That would mean my earnings for 2012 would be assessed? I was on maternity benefit from July to Dec 2012. And then I was unemployed and on unemployment benefit from Jan-June 2013.

Does anyone know if I would be entitled to Maternity Benefit in 2014?

I was on maternity from sept 2010 and was due to go again in Jan 2012, but had to go early in Dec 2011. I thought I wouldnt get the full 262 rate but I did as they went back to 2008 or 2009 for the PRSI contributions, I worked full time from 2000 till 1010.

I called the maternity section and I had a copy of my PRSI contributions and the lady went through my options over the phone, they were a great help. I had already applied but wasn't sure if changing to 2011 was going to be a problem.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks, i'm afriad i used too much of my PRSI contributions while signing on this year. I was unemplyed from Jan/June but only signed on from March to June, so i'm hoping it wont make a massive difference.
I suppose my best bet is to ring them, but its hard to find time to ring an office that is open during office hours when i work the same hours myself without colleagues hearing!

You could use the online contact form https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/secure/GENENQ.aspx & choose Maternity Benefit from the dropdown subject menu. Give your email address as your contact details.
