D600 yay or nay?

Well I sold my D3200 and am now digital-less :) I've really been enjoying shooting film on my F100. So I've offloaded most of my crop gear and looking at the D600.

I'll be able to share lenses and also use my SB-800 on both so I think it's a fairly cost effective solution. To make things sweeter I can pick up the D600 tax free in Dublin airport. Dixons price match amazon.

I guess my question is does anyone have the D600 and how do you find it? What's the jump like from crop to full frame?

    Thanks

Please don't even consider it!!! While the spec is outstanding and it should be a great camera it has given users nothing but trouble in that it's sensor has a serious issue with grime acquisition (to put it lightly). Nikon are already about to release a D610 to replace the brand new D600 which says a lot!

If you can afford a D800 it's outstanding, otherwise I'd consider a second hand D700 as that camera is top grade too (although that removes your tax option).

Thanks for that Brian. Yes I spent half the night looking at reviews and the dust issue was a mentioned prominently. I did read In some places that it l after usage the dust issue resolved itself. But I'm not planning on replacing a FF body for quite some time so the it is weighing heavily on my consideration. I read some reports about the 610. I wonder though if the pricing will be identical. On a shoe string budget here.

Has anyone lived through the dust issues on the d600 or is it really unbearable?

I understand budget all too well so I'm with you on that, that makes your purhcase all the more important and you want good equipment. Why buy a camera with a known issue in that case, I believe the price will be very similar from Nikon for the D610, perhaps cheaper as they know they messed up but seriously if you can stretch to a D800 then trust me its stunning!!!!

Yes the d800 looks great, but it is a couple of hundred euro more. I could wait and buy it in a few months but I guess when that time comes I could be thinking about the next model.

The d600 has already been discounted by Nikon and I would image a d610 would bring the price back up d600 launch prices which would make it restrictive again.

Another side of me says why bother Im enjoying film.... but I guess the way of the world is digital.

Also I dont know if I would have the chance to get it tax free, (no holiday planned outside EU for the near future).

On the dust issue the net is quite negative but having spoken to staff in Gunn's they reckon it is no worse than with most nikons. Ken Rockwell seems to agree on this too.

D800 is nice, but I think I just dont have the greens. Need to decide by tomorrow... So any further input would be much appreciate.;)

I've been a D600 user for nearly a year and I can tell you I have had absolutely no issues with dust on the sensor and haven't had to clean it once in that time. Like all inter-changable lens systems, you just have to take a bit of care and be a bit sensible when and where you change lenses.

I love the file size, it allows me to crop in tight and still have plenty of detail to work with - IMO unless you are planning to print at billboard size, the D800 file sizes are way too big and slow down post processing quite considerably. I shoot mainly action sports and auto focus when set-up correctly is pin sharp and very fast. Low light high ISO is excellent.

Having said all that, if there is an update on the way, I'd probably wait for that.

Thanks for that Ado. Good to get the perspective of an owner.

The thing with the 610 is it will probably be priced closer to the original RRP of the D600 €2,000+ Vs the currently price of about €1600 which I can get tax free making a further saving.

Or maybe im completely wrong on the pricing. As I see NIkon products go through a downward pricing cycle and I just cant imagine a new product coming in at the same price as a D600 today.

Probably worth noting is I would consider my self a consumer rather than a pro. So my way of life doesnt totally depend on it. But all the same id like to get a quality camera.
