    Hi guys

So got a new job in a large financial company and due to start a day from tomorrow.

This is my first job ever do the nerves are beginning to creep in. What are the do's & don't.

To save money I though of bringing packed lunch. But I don't know what the norm is. A mat suggested crisp, sandwich and bar. Which I immediately said crisp = bad breath.

For my desk should I have any pictures, or funny gifs e.g always smile and keep your chin up etc.

Look smart, introduce yourself, ask questions, be eager to learn etc

The lunch sounds fine, maybe swap the crisps for some fruit.

Don't bother with stuff for your desk until you have settled in and see what the norm is, some organisations hot desk, others have a clear desk policy etc

Advice above is best, good to bring your own lunch, keep calm and smile, work out the office environment and ease yourself into it.

if it's your first job, just relax, people are normally nice. I take it your quite young maybe early 20's etc? People will help if you ask them for advice eg.. where is the toilet, what are policies on lunch etc etc... first days are always interesting, you get to meet new people and learn the ropes etc...

    I just thought office etiquette.

Hold the door while/lift if you can.

Endeavour to say please and thank you.

    Ask before borrowing.

    Be Clean, nails, hair, B.O etc. ( can I grow a beard ? )

Seriously calm down, you are way overthinking this.

Just go in tomorrow well dressed, having showered/shaved etc., observe how people behave/interact in the office and follow their lead.

When you are being shown what to do make notes. Nothing worse than spending hours showing somebody the ropes only to have to do it all again the next day as they've forgotten!

Don't take lunch for the first week. It's important to mingle. Your boss/team may even take you out for lunch and you'll look a right plonk with your sandwich (I bring packed lunches btw)

Do take lunch on the first day - you don't know what the deal might be, whether people go out together, whether there's anywhere to buy lunch etc. Worse case, you just leave it in your bag, and possibly have to throw out a sandwich - which is far better than being starving all afternoon.

...whether there's anywhere to buy lunch etc. ...

Wasn't advocating starving him/herself but surely they can scope the building out on streetview and see if there's a spar/mace/etc around.

    - Every place I start (I'm a contractor so I move around a lot) I always draw a little desk map of all the surrounding desks on first page of notebook and fill in people's names as I get introduced.
    - Make sure you ask loads of questions - people will be helpful.
If you are asked to go to tea / lunch etc make sure you do - it's better to mingle well in first few days and then you can work out patterns, but if you don't mingle early then it will be harder to get involved later.

If it's a large financial company I'm assuming there's somewhere in the area you can buy lunch. It's your lunch, do and eat what you want. Putting stuff unrelated to work on your desk on your first day would look unprofessional. As first jobs go it's a pretty good one so well done.

My advice would just be to use the cop-on that got you the job in the first place.

Excellent advice. Cover all bases for lunch on your first day, a packed lunch in case that is the norm, and some cash in case there is a paid canteen / your team go out to eat. Everyone was the new boy/girl once so should be welcoming and accommodating. Congrats and good luck :-)

It went okay. I took lunch on first day. So taking a packed sandwich was a good idea. My boss is okay, and I had a good laugh this week. Next week the real fun begins.

I cant really give much away as they'll know who am I.
