so are all the new van gutless and lacking power, drove 3 with work over the last few weeks and found all really lacking bar the transit
Crafter gutless hard on diesel and uncomfortable seating for any long length driving.
transporter comfy best seats and most comfortable bit gutless ok on diesel
transit best handling ok comfort wise and best on diesel.
mate has a Renault master and while there very comfy wonder would they hack much hardship.

We had an 04 and 05 Master for a few years, never gave a moments trouble except for the well known clutch slave cylinder.

They were on the road a lot but well treated and looked after like two babies. Did 10-11l/100 km all day, great comfortable van on a long trip (did a few to the UK with it). Loads of space, and FWD means a low loading lip at the back. The 05 is still on the road with an ex colleague, from my experience they were excellent.

It's typically European to stick a small underpowered engine into a Vehicle , that will never change.

Car makers like to charge a huge premium for power as they see it, I call it power that is suitable for the vehicle.

You have the option of buying the 140 hp TDI in the Caddy, and the Transporters have decent power options at extortionate prices.

If you look at the U.K engine options for most cars/vans they usually have a lot more high power engine prices that dealers in Ireland won't specify but you can always order the higher powered one even if it's not on the options list.

But I've seen 75 hp caddy vans.

It seems we're heading backwards though, I could not drive something as underpowered as a 75 hp Caddy Van, even the old 1.9 104ps was underpowered.

If a company has a fleet of vans on the road, usually they will buy the cheapest, that means the most underpowered crappiest spec they can get.

A company I used to work for thought that buy changing their fleet of vans to the lowest powered ones they could find they would save a lot of fuel, it turned out their fuel bills increased dramatically because the lads were driving the absolute crap out of them all the time because they had such little power.

I think the pinnacle of "gutless" in car/vans was reached twice.

    The VAG 1.9 SDI caddys
    &
The fiat and opel 1.3 diesels

Hyundai h1 is the job. 180hp and rwd as standard. Also good enough on fuel

We've had numerous transit buses over the years and they've always treated us well! Comfy and daycent power when ya need it. Good on fuel aswell! Then again we've never kept one older than 3 years old, so i don't know how reliable they become as they age....

Slightly O/T but does it use a Toyota engine as it's just a rebadged Peugeot?

The short wheelbase is the omnipresent 1.6 HDI as fitted to everything - they stuck a D-4D badge on it anyway,
the long wheelbase has one engine option - a 128hp 2.0 so called D-4D. As its 1997cc and a regular D-4D is 1999cc, I'm guessing its the DW10 HDI engine.

It would be interesting to get a % of the small commercials sold that use that 1.6hdi engine
    Seems to be in alot

Just for you, I deduced this:

For total diesel vehicles sold this year, 13.4% were that 1.6 HDI engine.
For total petrol and diesel vehicles, 9.85% are that engine.

    Ford 3502
    Mazda 511
    Mini 307
    Citroen 834
    Peugeot 1049
    Suzuki (sx4) 3
    Volvo 498

we had a 2006 120bhp master up until recently from new and never caused any trouble I mean none. one wheel bearing was all it needed in all those years. without doubt the best van we every had out of 25 plus commercials over the years although the renaults were always good vans i found anyway. In terms of gutless vans id say the 2.0 sdi caddy is one of the worst they have a few at work and there a joke power wise but are very reliable.
