I took a leave of absence in January but may be returning to my club next week.

Do I return to my previous handicap or do start all over again and submit 3 cards.

I would prefer to go back to my old handicap (5)

I would be embarressed if my 3 cards resulted in a much higher handicap and I went on to do well forthcoming competitions, I would feel like a bit of a fraud.

In theory your handicap lapses after 6 months and you're then meant to submit 3 new cards for handicap purposes, in practice that doesn't always happen, so contact your club and see what they want you to do.

thanks, I've been asking a few mates and got the same advise, I'll speak to the club about it.

it's odd though that there does not seem to be a 100% rock solid process to follow

There kinda is a process to follow, but it allows for certain discretion, so it's impossible to give a concrete answer.

yep, agree that club discretion in this area is valuable without a doubt

Generally speaking if you are on a leave of absence your handicap dosn't lapse as you are still a member of that clu, (albeit on a leave of absence) should you leave a club however then the 6 month rule applies.

if you played off 5 in January - Even if you brought in 3 90's, they'll never give you more than 6 or 7 based on your past ability

I went through exactly this process recently. Submitted 3 cards that varied from horrendous to ok, and in the end was given back exactly my old handicap. Seems to be little risk of not getting back what you had before.

In practice this should always happen. Clubs must follow the guidelines in the CONGU handbook. How can we complain about players abusing the system if clubs are not following correct procedures?

I agree, you should find out which clubs are doing this and sanction them accordingly.
