I wonder what sort of NDA will they have in place? Will friends be able to play it, or will it be strictly controlled? Should be interesting to see.

Everything else about this is open so I'd be surprised if there were any restrictions.

Well I only need one more friend to be eligible. My poor profile is a little sparse. I doubt I'm in with much of a chance at all. I'm not very community based and that will go against me.

Sierra Oscar - I was wondering the same thing and what would be included on the NDA.

Pity the poor people having to organise and whittle down to the 300 participants out of all the potential candidates.

    From their blurb:

Will beta testers be allowed to share info about their experience and post pictures and opinions online?
Yes, that really is the whole point. The input from testers should come in many forms: bug reports, forum posts, concept art, 3D prints, haikus, and also very publicly stated opinions.

Currently a little more than 300,000 eligible so really your chances currently are 1 in 319,392 :p

Besides, astronomical chances aren't so bad any more, it's when your odds are economical in number that you can pretty much give up hope :p

Well actually it's 300/300,000 so our chances are 1/1000

    Hmmm

The steam boxes they will sell appear to be nothing more than mini-itx computers with the same off the shelf components as a .. normal gaming PC

If they have the same components - they are surely going to sell for the same price

Essentially it's just a smaller repackaged PC with an accessible gaming platform

A bit like a console/PC hybrid. The prices on these things will no doubt reflect the cost of the hardware, so depending on configuration the median price should be approx 700 to 800 euros...

Perhaps they'll see the box at cost price with later profits taken on steam games sales? even then they'll still be pretty expensive, there isn't much of a margin on intel or AMD chips

I still think it's a good idea, and will appeal to gamers who want PC games and graphics without the headache of putting together a gaming PC or buying a lemon

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,812 ✭✭✭Vojera

Will you be able to change components, e.g. gpu? Just wondering because with consoles you will always be able to play a ps4 game on your ps4, no matter how good the graphics get, but pc gaming isn't the same. What I'm wondering is will there come a point where your steam box won't be able to play newer games? Will you have to buy a whole new updated steam box or will you be able to improve it as you go?

Also, anyone who has friended me and I haven't accepted, I've been playing on origin this week (dun dun dun! But Alice: Madness Returns on origin was 10% the price of what it was on Steam, so I make no apologies) but I will get around to accepting you today ;)

Yeah you can, Valve have said that they will all be 'modular' in nature which basically means you can upgrade them yourself.

By your calculations there will be 3,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 applicants.

I suspect that games on Steam would have to be rated somehow; for folks who aren't particularly familiar with hardware specs.
i.e. "This game requires a level 5 Steambox or above".

Or better still, games on the Steam store should check your hardware vs. the requirements of the specific game you're looking at. (Does it do this already? i.e. "Just so you know; if you buy this game, you won't be able to run it on this machine").

  • Administrators, Computer Games Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 32,532 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Mickeroo

If the higher end ones compete with the likes of PS4 and XB-1 price wise they could blow them out of he water imo. Even just 100 euro more and I'd go for a steambox over one of them no problem.

How the hell is a 450W PSU able to power a GTX780 and Intel i7-4770???

I thought they would need a lot more power than that, at least 600W.

259W with those items only and arbitrary selections of 4 sticks ddr3 RAM and one hard drive. Did not include fans/cooling etc or any other devices. - According to http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

I think they'll make these available at very good prices for the hardware, but set up to make playing pirated games difficult.

A full system with GTX780 and i7-3960X is pulling 405W from the wall. System builders tend to overestimate power requirements.

there isnt a hope of that tbh unless nvidia do a cut down deal as a GTX780 on its own costs more than the console.

The GTX760 i5 model will beat a console easily and if they can get that into console RRP's.

There's a part of me that wants us all to start with Level 1 Steamboxes, but as you defeat games and complete challenges the Steambox levels up and becomes more powerful, gains custom perks (Instaboot! +3 against Dazed n Confused! Physics CoProcessor!) eventually specialising in one of several roles based around the prime stats of CPU, Graphics and Memory.

I think I need to step away from the PC and go outside for a while...

Great idea! I could see it changing size and shape as it levels. It starts off looking like a Portal companion cube under your TV and finishes looking like GLaDOS, hanging from the ceiling and interrogating you when you enter the room. :)

    Sure it is.
It is how it works, but there are sometimes over 6,000,000 Steam users online concurrently. The total number of active accounts would be much higher. There might be far more than 300k applicants.

Also there will be 25 awarded to users based on community contributions. You would need to have made some extraordinary contributions to be in the top 25 worldwide. So 275 will be available in the lottery.

System builders put in an overhead for upgrading in the future without needing a new PSU since they can last a good number of years. Also, erring on the side of caution when advising people is a good idea, there is more than just a CPU and GPU drawing power and if someone starts adding tons of HDDs and you gave them only a little headroom...

Sorry, I get around 60 spammy friend / group requests a day and I often I miss genuine invites when it comes to clearing the backlog. :o

PM me on your profile and I will add you. :)

Do we need a thread to allow people post their SC profiles to allow other forum members to add them as friends?
