Started a plc course last monday. When I applied for it, it said " FETAC is currently reviewing the course title and content of all courses nationally. Therefore, there may be changes." Its an animal care course, its more like a leaving cert instead of having anything to do with animals. Word processing, maths and biology have been brought in instead. I'm really pissed off  I have ECDL done and did biology and maths for the leaving cert. Now I know they can't centre the course around me or anything, but I'm just thinking, how foolish will I look if I go for an interview, and am asked what I did in the course? What were my subjects? I feel like I'm not gonna gain new skills or anything.

I am going to talk to my course supervisior about it, I paid €500 for this course and I dont wana come out with pretty much fuk all.

What do ye think? Am I right to complain? Any advice? I'm very annoyed, I feel its very sneeky, no one said anything to us about this.

You're a week in, relax! Do you know what modules you are covering? You cannot get the Award without doing some animal care modules, such as animal Anatomy and animal welfare. The course might be structured that these are taught in a block.

Get the course plan before you go complaining.

FETAC modules are all being reviewed nationally. We have to change 3 of them in our centre and the courses have already started!

Are you trying to say that Biology is irrelevant? Are there no modules relevant to Animal Care at all?

If your course is Animal Care (5M2768), then the compulsory modules are: Animal Anatomy and Physiology (5N0750) and Animal Welfare (5N0753). YOu have to do a Communications module and a Work Experience one. The remaining 4 modules can be made up of what the college can offer and Biology and Maths are on that list. The link to FETAC is here

As long as you pass all of your 8 modules, you will have a recognised Level 5 qualification in Animal Care. Check the course title and the list of modules I've linked. If they don't match up, complain, if they do, then they are offering that course as they should.

They might seem irrelevant but you have to think of the bigger picture here. If you went on to do vet nursing for example you would need some proficiency in maths as you will be calculating drug doses, oxygen flow rates, drip rates etc etc. Science subjects are essential because you need a level of understanding of how the body works at a cellular level. This will influence how diseases effect the animal, how they respond to treatment etc.
