Well, there seem to get a lot of flack around here. I am looking to buy a Laptop for college, where i have constant WiFi for revising lecture notes, research etc. I do not need a multimedia machine, a gaming machine, or anything like that. is a chromebook not perfect for my needs, or am I missing something?

I'd personally rather the Surface RT but they both have similar limitations. Neither can install traditional software (itunes, firefox, etc) but the RT at least includes Msft Office and lets you install Apps. The Chrome does not. It is the cheapest unit though.

I wouldn't say a chromebook is "perfect" for your needs, but sure its somewhat suitable. You will probably find it useful, but will get annoyed with its limitations over time.

My top college device remains to be the Surface Pro (and now the Pro 2) because frankly you can't beat a tablet that has all the functionality of a laptop, and handwriting your notes is a proven way to study better - the pro lets you do that without any extra hardware, or paper. I can lug around years worth of notes, all indexed and searchable, and they don't weight anything extra.

People have installed Chrubuntu (Chrome version of Ubuntu) on Chromebooks, removing many of the limitations.
But as it's Ubuntu, it still won't run every program, but is still more versatile.
