If both policies are for SD&P then you can
Commercial cars/vans can be used for SDP too ;)

No is the answer. Private car policy will not cover use of a commercial. If you trade your car in for a van you have to cancel your private insurance and take out a new commercial policy no matter what you use it for.

Private car Policy will have to be cancelled and a commercial Policy taken out instead. If you are only using the van for private use, then a commercial vehicle Policy can be issued excluding business use.

It is my experience that this is not a runner. Best phone your insurer for definite answer.

Again, I had changed my insurance to a commercial fiesta van. Private insurance.

Please, do go on, about how this (which has already happened) is not possible :pac:

A fiesta van is different to a transit etc. They are a car van which can be insured private but a transit has to be insured as a commercial. This is what I was told by an insurance company when we got the 206 van. She said anything that was not based on a car had to have commercial. Maybe this has changed since they started in-forcing the private/commercial tax

No. I run a crap load of commercials and have a great relationship with my insurers, they'll bend over backwards to help, but to transfer from a car to a van, you have to cancel the car insurance and take out a new commercial policy. They're very rigid (excuse the pun) on that.

When I transferred from a car to a van I had to open a new policy, but the insurer applied the full NCB I had earned on the private policy.

Apart from the use that a vehicle is put to, commercial vehicle policies have different wordings in them (particularly in relation to passengers/fixed seats), so an insurer will usually want to switch you over to their commercial policy contract and exclude business use

would that be cheaper or more expensive than a private policy do you know???

Very hard to say. There isn't much difference in the risk but very few insurers are prepared to offer SD&P only on a commercial vehicle, so competition is weak allowing some to charge what they like

To get private cover on a commercial vehicle (ie SD&P only, vehicle must not be taxed commercially) and then modify this to commercial insurance (vehicle must be taxed commercially), there was a price difference of 20%. However this was to cover business use too.
