Thinking about doing veterinary in ucd after the leaving but the points are mental, I don't really want to study outside of Ireland,
Can anyone give me advice on what other options are out there ? I really want to work with animals, I know there is vet nursing but that doesn't appeal to me !

Im a vet and wouldnt do it from the start again. All that study and sacrifice gets u a job working 12 hours a day, sometimes all night for less than 30k.

If ur able to get the points do medicine.

If its animals u want to work with. Marry a farmer :)

You really want to work with animals but only if you can study veterinary medicine in UCD. Are you really sure you have given this enough thought?

In fairness, gonzo, if there were a few places in Ireland offering vet, I'd agree with you if the OP was obsessing on UCD.

Heading abroad to study can be a very daunting thought for some at 17+

Also, it can have major financial implications, especially if the OP lives in Dublin anyway.

OP, you probably need to think about this a lot ... I've known of lots of people who have "really wanted to work with animals" and gone for vet. and found it totally the wrong course for them ... not everyone who feels that they really want to work with people would make good doctors either.

Have you considered trying to organise a placement with a vet and seeing what the work is actually like, even if during half-term or Easter holidays if you're in 6th year?

You make a good point but had the OP said 'I really want to be a vet but I don't really want to study abroad' I wouldn't have asked the question I asked. I was trying to be helpful:-) In this case though, OP just said she really wanted to work with animals. It didn't sound to me like she had thought it through.
I qualified as a vet nurse recently, I would say only about half my class will actually work as vet nurses, a lot of girls came in 'wanting to work with animals' but after seeing practice decided it wasn't for them.
