I have posted in a similar thread asking about a specific laptop, but I am hoping to get some general advice on what I can get for this kind of money that will suit my needs.

Whats the best I can get for €1000 these days that will give me a fast all purpose laptop that I can carry around, surf the web, use for my PhD running programmes like SPSS and CANOCO effectively, good screen for watching movies is essential and some light gaming like total war games?

Or even if you can advise the best sites to shop around I would be super grateful!:)

Have a look at the new Lenovo Y510P, a decent allround laptop.

Or visit pcspecialist.co.uk and configure a laptop to your likings, pretty good value with high performance laptops.

Are Lenovo generally a reliable brand in terms of build quality and longevity of their laptops?

If you're looking for the top grade build quality and longevity, get a Lenovo ThinkPad T and you won't be disappointed, but €1,000 will get you a Core i3 at best, a Core i5 if you're extremely lucky (voucher). ;)
