Just wondering if anyone could offer any advice?. I'm a single mother of one and I'm currently looking for a bigger place for my son and I, My son's father owns a house that would be perfect for us, and is willing to rent it out to me, I was just wondering if by having my child's father as my landlord would my social welfare payments be affected? I'm currently claiming job seekers allowance and rent supplement. Any advice would be much appreciated, Thanks in advance.

    Absolutely.

There is no other house in Ireland that would suite other than this one?

    Screams out loud.

Haha, I know it's sounds odd but it's just that it would be easier in a way to deal with him rather than go through letting agents and the like plus it really is a lovely house with a huge back garden for my son, Don't think I'd get somewhere as big and as nice for the price he will lease it for. It would be the exact same as if I had a landlord as in rent payments and such. So what d'ya reckon would happen?.. Would I lose it all completely?

I seriously doubt they are going to believe that you are leasing the house that the father of your child owns. They will most likely assume, and rightly so, that you are living with him and trying to cover it up. It definitely would raise suspicion.

Yeah I know what you mean. But in all honesty that is not the case. How could they cut me off with no proof tho? Like surely you'd have to be found out or caught in some way before they could stop your payments?

Assuming he is renting it to you, and this isn't some sort of scam (it screams SCAM to me, but taking it on face value) ...

This won't work - when it is discovered he is the dad of your son you will end up paying all that rent supplement back yourself - unless he will, which if he is such a nice guy he, a man with assets, is charging you every month to live in his house and mind his son for free, there isn't a hope in hell.

If it's a genuine deal, why wouldn't he rent it at higher value to someone else? This is what welfare will think.

Or why doesn't he let you live there free in lieu of maintenance?

It's honestly genuine, He has a new partner. You're right about him paying it back.... Not a hope in hell!!! But I was never going to just claim without telling the DSP that he was the father of my son, I was going to tell them from the start. So all in all general consensus is that it's an awful idea!!? :(

I thought of that. I don't think the social welfare will allow that either tho!?

I can't see why they wouldn't. Is there maintenance in place? Have you disclosed this?

Yeah, He pays me 50euros a week, Yeah the DSP knows this, You see he bought this house about 10years ago, He lost the job he was in and is now only on minimum wage working through a recruitment agency.

There is probably no way you can orchestrate this without it looking like a scam. No different than trying to claim rent allowance on a house your mother or father owns.

I see. I think technically this may be allowed if there is a history of the house being rented out, however I think you will have to jump through hoops, show massive amounts of evidence, possibly have to appeal etc. Dont think it's worth it tbh.
