Top Baby Tooth Fell Out - New Tooth Not Permanent Tooth

5 and a half year old's top front tooth fell out.
I was expecting the bottom ones first, but not too worried at this stage.
Soon after it fell out, new tooth starts to appear, funny shape and a bit twisted.

Wife brought the child to the dentist, dentist says the new growth is not his permanent tooth and it will probably have to come out.

She can't remember what the dentist called it, anybody know ?

If it is removed, should the permanent tooth come down ok on it's own ?
