Value of an old car?

    Or lack thereof.

Basically, had a car stored for a long time now. and the classic "need the space" line has caught up with me.

its a 1987 opel corsa 1.0, 4 speed, 5 door. it was in regular use until 2007 with a service history from our local dealer, only 67000 miles on it. in 2007 it was parked up and had the rust on the wings and sills welded and repaired.

the bodywork is straight, it's showing its age and could do with a polish but is in ok shape. the interior is dare i say "perfect".

the battery is unsurprisingly flat but with a jump start it starts first time. the passengerside rear brake shoe sticks a little but it otherwise drives fine.

would it have any value aside from scrap?

Is there any fuel in the tank? :P

It's worth what someone is prepared to pay.

Surely someone must be interested in offering more than scrap? Looks honest enough. You could add even more value if it had some NCT on it.

i'm not looking to make a killing from it. to be honest it just seems to good to scrap, particularly as there isn't many of these cars left. i dont want this to look like a shill but if i thought it was going to a good home then not much more than scrap value would take it, in the interest of preserving it... i'm just wondering is it worth my while waiting, is there a market for this kind of thing, because it has to be gone asap.

    Are the photos recent?

Pity we don't have swap meets like in the states, it's sell at one of those.

Perhaps showing it's head at a classic car show could help?

a few months back, but relatively recent yes. it hasn't really been moved since 06/07. its been stored outdoors but under a cover. the paintwork is for the most part still quite good despie the less than perfect conditions and no notable rust bar a small bit in the spare wheel well.

I have an 85 5 door the same as that mouldering away in my shed.
Probably should get it weighed in.

Those Corsas are woefull pieces of crap, like most '80s opels.
Every other car in its class was better in every way.

Not my bag in any shape or form but I have seen these at classic car shows the last few years along with the likes of late 80's Corollas (saloon not twin cams) and Nissan Sunny's. There is a market for them and it looks very fresh so it's certainly worth a few bob to the right person.

For me a classic car is something cool from yesteryear that you always aspired to own but to others it's nostalgia, i.e. something that your father / fond relative had. Many people born in the 70's would have parents who owned one of these.

There's a classic car sales / show on in Swords on Oct. 13th. Ideal place to display this. In fact the last time I was at that show I remember seeing a MkII Fiesta for sale which would be a similar enough motor. ;)

In short - it's worth the guts of a grand to the right buyer IMO. ;)

Id run it through a NCT anyway and see what it comes out with.

thats a bit of a dim witted view. i don't think the cars class dynamics have much of a bearing on its future at this stage. as the comment below states and if i do say so myself its a piece of nostalgia, that maybe someone would appreciate. admittedly if it was like siwss cheese with rust and not turning over it would be fit for the crusher but for it to make it this far in such good shape i feel it deserves the chance to live on. not as a class leader but as a small piece of motoring history if at all possible.

this is pretty much what i was thinking. that it could be a memory to someone and someone might enjoy keeping it. maybe as an easy foot in the door of "classic" car ownership.

i think i will donedeal it with an asking price of 500 and be prepared to accept anything really. just wouldn't like to see it end up on superlites with a silly back box.

headlight alignment, 2 tyres and the sticking rear shoe would be my educated guess :)

So what if it does? That's the new owners prerogative. You couldn't have given away a 'boxy' Starlet 5 years back, now they are in good demand, but only as you say if they sport a set of superlites. ;)

    Would be happy with that!

Advertise for €850 and accept no less than €700.

It's not like selling a Ford Focus. With selling any 'classic' you have to wait for the right person to come up at the right time with dollars in their paw. Reducing the price is only a race to the bottom, eventually someone will see it and want it and be wowed by its condition. ;)

You hold out long enough you could probably get closer to a grand for it IMO. :)

A far superior car. In every way!

Is there an add up? (or where is the car located)
This is so old and boxy looking I think it is mad enough for me to drive!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 353 ✭✭DaveCol

Rather than donedeal you might do better joining one of the Opel forums and posting a for sale add there

.........couldn't agree with you at all on this. Sure they were plain, Opel even de-specced them for the Irish market for MY87, but they were a solid little car. The negines would go forever unlike the Japs or Fords of the day. They were simple to service and cheap to run and more solid than most small cars of the day.

I'd have that one in a heartbeat if it was a 3 door. Its was too good to scrap, but the Opel enthusiast forum is the place to put that.
