Hi I recently met someone and was planning on moving her in with me, We are both on BTEA studying for degrees, 3 years left. I am in receipt of rent allowance as a single person and getting 188 btea a week , she is only receiving 160 btea as she is under 25. Can anyone tell me will our btea or my rent allowance be affected if she moves in , or is there any other things I should be aware of.

As far as I know, BTEA will stay the same, but during the summer months you will have to claim as a couple, which will not be what you are getting now. Rent allowance will need to be reassessed as well.

Thanks for the reply , thats what I thought just wanted to make sure I was reading it right and I actually think we would be due a higher amount of rent allowance as a couple if we wanted to move to bigger place. Cheers again

I think you will only receive the couple rate. The best way to do this may be for you to claim for her on you claim, then you would get €188 and €124 per week qualified adult dependant rate on BTEA and JSA.

    So €312 in total.

I can't see how you could both keep your full payment as a couple.

As far as I know the rate paid for Btea is not affected during term time , it only changes when The summer begins as the previous poster said. If this is not the case then I read it wrong

No you are reading it right your btea won't be touched but your rent will be reduced.

Well it depends on where. Here in Monaghan its €300 per month for a single person, which is utterly laughable since in the entire of Monaghan, at that price, you can live in a studio apartment in Carrick, or a run-down converted schoolhouse in the middle of the countryside. The extra €50 per month limit increase for a couple in Monaghan adds a basement converted into a flat, a run-down townhouse in a rough area and a one-bedroom cottage in the countryside. Monaghan isn't exactly small and that turns back a total of 0 accommodation where I live :o

You won't get a massive increase if you move, and you will have to be completely re-assessed for rent allowance, so if anything, I would advise you stay where you know you can receive it.
