eBay UK - 'May not post to Ireland'

    Hey folks,

If I was to buy something on eBay UK and set my delivery address to be my Irish address (as opposed to Parcel Motel) in an auction where the ad says 'May not post to Ireland - Read item description or contact seller for postage options.' would the seller have no option but to cover the postage costs to my Irish address if I was the highest bidder?

Not too familiar with the general practice in this situation.

    Thanks.

If you use your Irish address eBay's system may not allow you to bid anyway. As for the seller covering the cost of postage - Why? Assuming you're able to bid, you should be prepared to cover whatever the additional postage costs will be or don't bid.

Nope; they could turn around and charge you 10.000 EUR shipping cost basically.

You can just have the package shipped to UK if you have friends there and have them re-shipped to your Irish address .What do you think ?

Unfortunately I don't have anyone in the UK..

    Was using Parcel Motel :)

You should be able to use the Parcel Motel NI address if they only ship to a UK address.

Usually it doesn't let you select an address outside the sellers country if they have specified this in their action. It should give you an option to enter another address.

For about 12 months "may not post to Ireland" has appeared on all ebay auctions by default, if you contact the seller they usually give a price for overseas P&P.

    Here's what I do.

    Try and bid.

If the system won't let me I send the seller a message and ask him to add my ebay ID to his exceptions list.

If the system lets me bid and I win the auction I send the seller a Request Total message saying "Hi from Ireland. Please let me know total including postage (which is usually not much more than UK rates)".

I wouldn't bid without knowing the postage costs first. They could ask for huge amounts if they wanted, even legitimately they could try & insist on an expensive courier or something.

If I was selling I would not want people bidding who do not know the postage either, as they might mess up my auction if they refused to pay what I asked.

I suppose it depends on the product.

I just buy records or CDs on ebay so they fall under the standard international small packet rates.
