Creating a solid base for a mattress on a sprung-slatted base

I have a king-size sprung-slatted base and I'm getting a new (expensive) pocket-sprung mattress, so I'd like to treat it well from the get go.

The slats are around 6cm apart so that would be ok, but apparently a flat base is still recommended to avoid the mattress sinking in the middle between the slats. I am thinking of taking a similar approach to that posted on this site (laying down MDF board on top, although they use an odd combination of laying one board across one end, and the other board down the middle, surely that cause an imbalance)

So I'm thinking of just getting 2 large MDF boards to cover the whole area and then drill a lot of holes to aid with ventilation, then cover the MDF with a soft layer.

That approach sound ok, or recommend anything else I should try?
