I know when I switched over to Airtricity back in 2007, it was the best deal going at the time. I know rates have apparently increased since then but I never really looked into it again. I just saw on my bill a "Standing Charge P2 Dom Urban" which was €14 and I wasn't sure what it was so rang up. I was told this is a set rate and I've always been paying it :o Anyway, the guy without me even asking asked if I wanted to see if I was eligible for a discount, put me through to another guy who gave me an 8% discount on my current day and night fees, guaranteed for the next year and without extending my contract. I don't know how my rates compare, even after the discount, but this was my last bill before I rang and got the discount so take 8% from the rates:

Standing charge P2 Dom Urban is the standing charges for their nightsaver urban account profile.

Nice one OP, just got a further discount as well. I was already receiving a 4% discount for receiving the bills online and that has been doubled to 8% discount now, same as your own deal.
The new rate pretty much matches the best rate out there (which is from Bord Gais energy) according to bonkers.ie

Great stuff, just checked bonkers.ie myself and it seems with the discount I may as well just stay put :)

Thanks op & cormie for bonkers.ie tip. Checked it out and I'm with electric Ireland and should be on 6% discount. They never tell you these things. Was going to go down the prepay power.ie route but it could cost you and extra €140 a year.

Breaking news has an article about airtricity prices going up 3.5% on November 1st. Is this following the rest or have all the others raised their rates already?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

This is my latest bill, seems the 8% discount lasted all of 34 or so days :(

Seems the new price now reflects the 3.5% mentioned by joefuss1986 and seems the 8% discount was never even applied? Take day rates, .1699 minus 8% should be .1563. So if it should have been .1563, add 3.5% to that and it should now be .1618

latest radio ad for airtricity says 23% seving with dual fuel is it a genuine 23% saving then or what ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

I'm not sure what that is, but this is just for electricity above.

I have a yearly event set in my calender in line with when all my utility bill contracts end and then I'm straight on to bonkers.ie etc for more discounts.

Discounts are usually on the electricity or gas used and not on the day rates/standing charges.

Makes sense to keep switching though each time your discounts run out as the discounts apply to new accounts for all the suppliers.

Just wanted to post this time for advice if anyone has experience?

I got my new "budget plan" amount that is to be paid for foreseeable future which has risen from the €67 I had been paying to €80. I totted up the cost of the last 24 months and it was working out at an average of €65 so I was a bit surprised to see it up to €80, but then, just a bit beyond 24 months ago, I had a huge bill for €240 odd for a month  so that's probably upping the average hence the increase, but that was a once off.

Anyway, it made me ring up to query it and I was told that the 8% discount I got which I posted about here, was going to expire at the end of this month (so whoever else got it from here watch out too) and that although I wasn't in contract, to get another discount I'd need to get into a new contract.

I asked the lady what's the lowest price she knows of and she said .1521 day and .0793 night which equates to a 17% discount, which is what seems to be on the airtricity website for new customers. The retention team rang me today and were only able to offer me 14% with a contract extended by a year (.1576 day rate).

The cost over the last 12 bills was €830 so that extra 3% between 14% and 17% would only be €25 and it's not really worth all the hassle of changing providers and having to change back and all that malarky, just to save €25 over the course of a year so I might just go with the 14% and get into another years contract so before I do, I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any deals that would actually be worth the hassle of switching to?

    Any feedback appreciated :)

And for the sake of this still being in BA: Ring your electricity supplier and ask about getting a discount, if you're not already on one you'll probably just be put through to the retention team to give you a discount, extend your contract and they'll keep you another year, so it's worth the two minute call to save what could be €100+ for most people if you're not bothered switching.

    And bonkers.ie as said earlier.

In my experience switching is always cheaper than retention rate, don't find it much hassle (if you can find your way to boards a simple online form shouldn't be too difficult). Also I'm on dual fuel so savings are higher than electricity only. The budget plan from airtricity is way off for me, they have me paying much more than neccesary -amount even went up after a low bill- and will probably leave me with >€600 credit when I leave them in a month or 2....
Don't mind as I'll just put that in credit with the new provider...

Thanks for that. I'm on day/night meters and from what I can see with both of them links, they emphasise on 24hr meters, unless I'm missing something :)

I also see mention of a standing charge, I don't recall having to pay any standing charge for mine though, unless I did when I first joined years and years ago?

Check your bills again - you are definitely paying a standing charge, and quite a high one for dual meters.

You can't compare percentage discounts between providers as they are comparing percent off their standard rate - which nobody pays - and each providers alleged standard rate is different to the ESBs standard rate, which nobody needs to pay but some people do.

Oh yeah so I am :o

I don't have gas at all so it's just the electricity I'm after. I checked bonkers and got this:
    1635742531.png

So the top suggestion there is an ex vat price of 15.44 compared to the 15.76 so that's about a 2% saving, or about €17 per year so probably not worth the bother of switching?

Bonkers is not the best comparison site, despite it being posted here all the time. Their rules prevent them from displaying one off offers, such as €30 cashback deals etc, so for the more accurate information you would be better to visit www.uswitch.ie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Thanks for that. I just checked and got the following results:

I notice neither bonkers or uswitch have the offers of the current company you're with in the suggestions, so it wasn't suggested for example to leave airtricity and sign up again for the 17% discount/€30 off they currently offer.

A guy called round to the house last night trying to get us to switch to Airtricity. I said to him that we already signed up six months ago. He said to me that when the twelve months are up, make sure we ring them to apply the 10% loyalty discount.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

That's probably just the retention discount? A lady from the retention team rang me and I was trying to get her to give me the 17% but she wouldn't budge from 14, even though I said I could just leave and sign up again to get a 30eur discount and the 17% for the year, she said they can't do it and not even a supervisor could action it. The 17% would be the lowest rates you can get from airtricity I'm guessing

its good to check the comparison sites, but as mentioned they don't list the sign up bonuses that companies offer, i think some have a cashback offer in addition to the % discount for switching online. worth having a check on their websites

Because that isn't possible, that's why. You can't leave a power firm without going to another first.

You can bitch scream and whine at them on the phone to try get it (as I've done to get the 'new customer' offer from Meteor, etc) but its not an officially available option.

There is a way that you can leave a current supplier and then rejoin. If you leave and move to Bord Gais, they do not tie you into a 12 month contract. So you could switch straight back to a provider with a bigger discount like SSE Airtricity, Electric Ireland or Energia.
